  • Patent number: 4865583
Abstract: Combination intravenous infusion/blood sampling and medication injection apparatus is provided whereby a patient may be administered an intravenous infusion fluid and be subjected to blood sampling or medication injector procedures without the need to make or break any fluid connection in a sealed closed system in order to prevent possible contamination from entering the apparatus and causing injury to the patient. In combination, a three-way valve and a diaphragm sealed blood sampling apparatus is connected to intravenous infusion and catheter tubing and a flushing syringe having sterilized connections is provided. The patient need only be connected to the catheter needle once and by manipulation of the three-way valve in conjucntion with the flushing syringe, the tubing may be purged of the intravenous infusion fluid.

  • Patent number: 4764167
Abstract: A suction apparatus for aspirating mucous from the nose, mouth and throat of the newborn to clear the respiratory passages after birth. Includes a catheter with a tip sized and shaped for the newborn, a mucous trap to collect the aspirated mucous, and a suction tube and mouthpiece to permit the application of controlled suction by the attending physician. The device incorporates safety features to prevent the accidental ingestion of dangerous microorganisms along with the aspirated air. These safety features include devices to close off the suction tube when mucous is about to enter it and filters to strain out any potential aerosols of mucous from the air entering the mouthpiece.

  • Patent number: 4758235
Abstract: Apparatus is provided for intravenous administration of a series of solutions for cardiopulmonary resuscitation. Each solution is in a separate syringe held in place on a base plate. All syringes are connected at the same time to a single stopcock with multiple inlets and a single outlet for connection via tubing to a needle in the patient's vein. A selector handle on the stopcock is rotated to a particle inlet to select the solution in a particular syringe. The assembly eliminates the changing of syringes, the confusion and errors, and the need for assistance of the prior apparatus and speeds up the administration of the medications to make the treatment more effective, and, more importantly, reduces the risk of bacterial contamination.

  • Patent number: 4457747
Abstract: Disclosed is an exchange transfusion device with two coupled, automatically driven syringes, one in a blood withdrawal system and one in a fresh blood injection system; the coupling insuring that the volume of blood removed from a baby in the withdrawal system will be simultaneously replaced by an equal volume of fresh blood from the injection system. This simultaneous equivolumetric withdrawal and injection overcomes the physiological problems arising from the non-simultaneity of equal volumes of withdrawal and injection. The syringes in the withdrawal and injection phase of an exchange transfusion are driven at a slow steady rate, but on the refill and discard phase are driven at a high rate to avoid clotting of standing blood in the withdrawal and injection systems.
