Patent number: 11379267Abstract: A database system receives a query to be processed. The database system has resources. A user assigns the query to a tier of resource allocation priorities in a hierarchy of tiers. The tier has been designated as being automatically managed by the database system. The tier has a plurality of levels of priority for resource allocation (LPRAs). The database system decomposes the query into a first step and a set of subsequent steps. The first step has a beginning and each of the set of subsequent steps has a respective beginning. The database system assigns the first step to a first LPRA, wherein executing the query at the first LPRA is projected by the database system to satisfy a service level goal (SLG) within a on_schedule_range of the SLG.Type: GrantFiled: March 25, 2021Date of Patent: July 5, 2022Assignee: Teradata US, Inc.Inventors: Hoa Thu Tran, Stephen A Brobst, Douglas P Brown, Frank Roderic Vandervort

Patent number: 10025588Abstract: A database system includes a parser that is capable of parsing database queries containing user-defined data type (UDT) methods. The database query is transformed by the parser into a statement according to a specified format. In performing the transformation, redundant instantiations of UDTs and invocations of methods are removed. In one implementation, the redundant instantiations and invocations are removed by grouping and combining clauses containing UDT methods.Type: GrantFiled: November 25, 2002Date of Patent: July 17, 2018Assignee: Teradata US, Inc.Inventor: Hoa Thu Tran

Publication number: 20160188638Abstract: An apparatus is provided for managing usage of database system resources by concurrent database users of a database system. The apparatus comprises a processor and a storage device communicatively coupled with the processor. The processor is programmed to (i) determine a number of in-use Access Module Processor Worker Tasks (AWTs) based upon at least one system-defined or user-definable Resource Limit rule, (ii) take a difference between the number of in-use AWTs and an AWT limit, and (iii) set the difference equal to a number of available AWTs for a new database job or request.Type: ApplicationFiled: April 8, 2015Publication date: June 30, 2016Applicant: Teradata US, Inc.Inventor: Hoa Thu Tran

Patent number: 8090943Abstract: A system, such as a database system, includes a shared library having plural routines. A linking procedure is used in which a routine (referred to as a “first routine”) is linked to a stub library containing stub programs corresponding to other routines that the first routine is authorized to invoke. If no linking error occurs, the first routine is then linked to the shared library. In some implementations, the first routine is one of a user-defined method (UDM), user-defined function (UDF), or stored procedure created in response to a database query language (e.g., Structured Query Language or SQL) statement.Type: GrantFiled: April 28, 2003Date of Patent: January 3, 2012Assignee: Teradata US, Inc.Inventor: Hoa Thu Tran

Patent number: 8055672Abstract: A graphical query and data mining interface provides visual feedback to a user during the construction of a query that helps the user determine the quality of the query as the query is being built. The graphical query and data mining interface determines relationships in the database from a database relationship document, such as an XML document. These relationships may be between columns, including columns in different tables. The relationship of columns in the database is then graphically displayed to a user. When the user selects a column in the database, a filtered display mechanism displays only those columns or records that satisfy the portion of the query already constructed. In this manner dynamic information is provided to the user as the user builds the query that indicates to the user the quality of the query.Type: GrantFiled: June 10, 2004Date of Patent: November 8, 2011Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: Judy Immaculate Tina Djugash, Hoa Thu Tran

Patent number: 7958159Abstract: In a database system, a database request is received, and database software dispatches steps associated with the database request to plural access modules of a database system for execution. Statistics are collected regarding execution of each step by a respective access module in response to receiving an indication of completion by the respective access module. It is determined whether statistics relating to execution of the database request violate one or more predefined rules, and in response to determining that the statistics relating to execution of the database request violate one or more predefined thresholds, one or more actions are performed by the database software.Type: GrantFiled: December 19, 2005Date of Patent: June 7, 2011Assignee: Teradata US, Inc.Inventors: Hoa Thu Tran, Choung H. Patent number: 7685602Abstract: A multi-node processing system includes a plurality of nodes in which various software components may be executed. To coordinate the control of the software components in the plural nodes, an instance of a manager module may be started in each of the nodes. In one example arrangement, the manager module may include a WINDOWS® NT or WINDOWS® 2000 service control manager. In the WINDOWS® NT or WINDOWS® 2000 environment, the software components that are controlled through the service control manager may be services. To perform control of the various software components, requests may be sent to the manager module instance in each of the nodes. The manager module then launches one or more server services in each node to perform the desired control task, which may be start the software component, monitor the software component, or terminate the software component.Type: GrantFiled: June 5, 2000Date of Patent: March 23, 2010Assignee: Teradata US, Inc.Inventors: Hoa Thu Tran, Matthew Dickey

Publication number: 20090094217Abstract: A graphical query interface provides visual feedback to a user during the construction of a query. In a first embodiment, the visual feedback helps the user determine the quality of the query as the query is being built. The relationship of columns in the database is graphically displayed to a user. When the user selects a column in the database, a filtered display mechanism displays only those columns or records that satisfy the portion of the query already constructed. In a second embodiment, the visual feedback eliminates some possible selections in the query tree due to previously-made selections that eliminate the eliminated selections as possibilities. In the second embodiment, the visual feedback mechanism may function according to data values in columns, and may also function according to known relationships between columns themselves.Type: ApplicationFiled: December 15, 2008Publication date: April 9, 2009Applicant: INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORPORATIONInventors: Richard Dean Dettinger, Judy Immaculate Tina Djugash, Jeffrey Wayne Tenner, Hoa Thu Tran
