Publication number: 20080071859Abstract: A client requests an object at a first server in a content delivery network (CDN), the request having been directed to said first server regardless of whether the first server has the requested object; When the first server does not have a copy of the requested object, it selectively replicating the requested object on the first server. The replicating is based at least in part on a measure of popularity of the requested object, wherein the requested object is not replicated to the first server when the measure of popularity of the requested object does not exceed a popularity threshold.Type: ApplicationFiled: October 31, 2007Publication date: March 20, 2008Applicant: Level 3 Communications, LLCInventors: Steven Seed, Kevin Hobbs, Shane Glynn, Isaac Foraker, Peter Jones, Homer Chen

Publication number: 20080065724Abstract: A content delivery method directs a request by a client for an object to a first server in a content delivery network (CDN), regardless of whether the first server has the requested object. If the first server has the requested object, then it is served to the client from the first server; otherwise, the first server redirects the client request to a second server in the CDN to handle the request. The second server may be a peer server of the first server. The first and second servers may be edge servers in the CDN.Type: ApplicationFiled: October 30, 2007Publication date: March 13, 2008Applicant: Level 3 Communications, LLCInventors: Steven SEED, Kevin HOBBS, Shane GLYNN, Isaac FORAKER, Peter JONES, Homer CHEN

Publication number: 20070174463Abstract: A method, system and computer program product for managed object replication and delivery redirects, directly or indirectly, a client's request for an object that is not available at a best or optimal handling edge server of a network to a parent server that has the requested object. So, where the requested object is not available at the handling edge server, the client's request is redirected directly to the parent server that can provide the requested object to the client or indirectly via one or more parent servers to a parent server that can provide the requested object to the client. The method, system and computer program product further intelligently replicates the object to the edge server if the object is popular enough. Likewise, an object is removed from an edge server when it is no longer popular. All redirection and replication operations are preferably transparent to the end-user and do not degrade the quality of service.Type: ApplicationFiled: March 8, 2007Publication date: July 26, 2007Applicant: Level 3 Communications, LLCInventors: Steven Seed, Kevin Hobbs, Shane Glynn, Isaac Foraker, Peter Jones, Homer Chen

Publication number: 20060159178Abstract: The invention provides a digital image stabilization apparatus for compensating a jitter occurred in the ith frame among N frames of a video sequence, where each of the N frames includes a plurality of blocks, N is a natural number larger than or equal to 3 and i is an integer index ranging from 1 to N. The apparatus includes a determining module, a comparing module and an adjusting module. The determining module is to determine a block of background region BRi-1 in the (i?1)th frame. The comparing module, coupled to the determining module, is to compare the block of BRi-1 in the (i?1)th frame with the corresponding block in the ith frame so as to determine a jitter vector. The adjusting module, coupled to the comparing module, is to adjust the ith frame in accordance with the jitter vector to compensate for the jitter occurred in the ith frame.Type: ApplicationFiled: December 30, 2005Publication date: July 20, 2006Inventors: Yu-Chu Peng, Homer Chen, Chang-Jung Kao

Publication number: 20060133511Abstract: This invention provides a method to speed up mode decision in video coding standards. It is based on the characteristics of mode distribution and the relationship among the modes of neighboring blocks. It compares the main steps of checking SKIP mode, checking if neighboring blocks have a same mode, checking the best mode, and checking each mode in all inter modes then selecting the best one of these modes. Compared to the H.264 reference software full search method, the simulation result shows that this method can save up to 66.81% of the total encoding time with a slight increase in bit rate and a negligible PSNR drop.Type: ApplicationFiled: August 23, 2005Publication date: June 22, 2006Inventors: Homer Chen, Che-Yu Chang, Chia-Ho Pan
