  • Publication number: 20090211709
Abstract: An alignment tool for a bonding apparatus comprises a loading surface for receiving a pushing force from a surface of a device which is attached to the bonding apparatus, the loading surface being arranged and constructed to experience a tilting moment upon receiving an unequally distributed pushing force from a misaligned device acting on it. The loading surface transmits the tilting moment experienced by it to a sensing surface which is operatively connected to the loading surface through a columnar body, which has a smaller width than the loading surface and the sensing surface, and which connects the loading surface and the sensing surface. An array of piezoelectric elements communicates with the sensing surface and produces electrical signals in response to the tilting moment such that a computing unit operatively connected to the piezoelectric elements may detect a direction of tilt of the loading surface from the electrical signals produced by the piezoelectric elements.

  • Patent number: 7549034
Abstract: A method, apparatus and system are disclosed for redistributing memory allocation to portions of dynamic random access memory (DRAM) and dual in-line memory module (DIMM) devices that are underutilized, in order to balance memory usage more evenly amongst active devices so as to limit the amount of power and the thermal load consumed by an individual memory component. The disclosed method, apparatus and system are capable of identifying and tracking memory usage to minimize power consumption in a way that lessens the detrimental effects of “throttling” or reduced power modes for memory devices.

  • Publication number: 20080116835
Abstract: A method for damping vibrations in a stepper motor with micro-stepping control which comprises the steps of identifying the force amplitudes and phase shifts of multiple harmonic detent torques of the stepper motor, such as the first, second and fourth harmonic detent torques, and tuning the stepper motor with different current commands until minimum friction and resistive torque are obtained. Thereafter, a compensating harmonic current derived from said force amplitudes and phase shifts of the said multiple harmonic detent torques is injected into a current command during operation of the stepper motor to compensate for torque ripples.

  • Patent number: 6975478
Abstract: A disk drive manufacturing method calibrates the stitching gain of a position error signal (PES) by sampling servo information from a quadrature servo pattern while the head is maintained at the quarter-track positions and then calculating the kurtosis of the distribution of the PES values calculated from the samples. Because the kurtosis is a measure of the deviation from a normal or Gaussian distribution, the kurtosis of a PES distribution is used to optimize the stitching gain value through iteration until the kurtosis is close to zero, indicating that the PES with the optimal stitching gain values has a near-Gaussian distribution. The stitching gain calibration is performed for all heads and for multiple tracks across the surface of the disk for each head. The resulting values of stitching gain, each associated with a head and track, are stored in the disk drive memory and recalled during operation of the disk drive.

  • Patent number: 6827247
Abstract: Apparatus for detecting the oscillation amplitude of an oscillating object (3) includes an optical radiation source (9) and a detector (10) including first and second optical radiation sensing areas (24A, 24B) adjacent each other. The detector (10) and the optical radiation source (9) are adapted to be located opposite each other with the oscillating object (3) located between the source (9) and the detector (10) so that the object (3) blocks a portion of the sensing areas (24A, 24B) from receiving optical radiation from the source (9). A processor (18) coupled to the detector (10) receives first and second output signals representing the magnitude of optical radiation sensed by the first and second optical radiation sensing areas (24A, 24B), respectively. The processor (18) processes the first and second output signals to obtain an indication of the amplitude of oscillation of the object (3).

  • Patent number: 6594106
Abstract: A system and method for adaptively compensating for real-time variations in mechanical dynamics of a head-positioning assembly during track follow and seek operations. The head-positioning assembly includes a voice coil actuator that positions a read/write head utilizing a coil and carriage in conformity with an actuator control signal. Variations in resonant mode characteristics are anticipated in real-time in accordance with measured temperature variations. These parametric variations are translated in real-time by a state space model to determine a secondary velocity and displacement of the read/write head during track follow and seek operations. In response to this secondary velocity and displacement determination, the actuator control signal is dynamically adjusted to compensate for the determined secondary head velocity and displacement, thereby improving head positioning accuracy and increasing servo bandwidth.

  • Patent number: 6577463
Abstract: A system and method for precompensating for tangential misalignment in a direct access storage device adjusts a SID timing window individually for every track or surface of the direct access storage device. The system and method generate a calculation of the tangential misalignment and adjust, in accordance with the calculation of tangential misalignment, a timing window during which the transducer head reads the information located on the storage surface. The calculation of tangential misalignment may be the result of a direct measurement of the tangential misalignment, or may be converted from radial misalignment data. The adjustment of the timing window may comprise opening the timing window an amount depending upon the degree of misalignment of each track, and may comprise shifting the window in time either forward or backward depending upon the nature of the calculated misalignment.
