  • Publication number: 20130211156
Abstract: The present invention provides a simple three step process for the production of 1,3,3,3-tetrafluoropropene (HFO-1234ze). In the first step, carbon tetrachloride is added to vinyl fluoride to afford the compound CCl3CH2CHClF (HCFC-241fb). HCFC-241fb is then fluorinated with anhydrous HF to afford CF3CH2CHClF (HCFC-244fa) in the second step. Dehydrochlorination of HCFC-244fa, in the third step, affords the desired product, CF3CH?CHF (HFO-1234ze). Following similar chemistry, vinyl chloride may be used in place of vinyl fluoride.

  • Publication number: 20130211155
Abstract: The present invention describes a process for making CF3CH?CHF (HFO-1234ze). The process involves the addition of carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) to 1,2-dichloroethylene to form CCl3CHClCHCl2. The compound CCl3CHClCHCl2 thus can then either be treated with HF to produce CF3CHClCHClF as the main product, or it can be converted to CCl2?CHCHCl2 (1230za) by dechlorination. CCl2?CHCHCl2 can be treated with HF such that the main product obtained is CF3CHClCHClF. CF3CH?CHCl may be produced as a by-product, but upon treatment with HF, it affords the compound CF3CHClCHClF. The desired compound, CF3CH?CHF (HFO-1234ze), is obtained as a trans/cis mixture by dehydrochlorination of CF3CH2CHClF or by dechlorination of CF3CHClCHClF.

  • Publication number: 20130195639
Abstract: A turbine assembly for an exhaust gas turbocharger has separate first and second volutes that are sequentially activated via a valve that receives exhaust gases from an engine. In a first position of the valve, only the first volute receives exhaust gas; in a second position, both volutes receive exhaust gases. In a third position, a bypass passage is also opened so that some exhaust gas bypasses the turbine wheel. Unlike conventional twin-scroll turbines, each volute receives exhaust gases from all engine cylinders, and the first volute feeds gas into the B-width portion of the wheel, while the second volute feeds gas into the wheel after the contour portion.

  • Publication number: 20130193985
Abstract: A proximity sensor includes a relatively simple temperature compensation circuit, and includes a variable gain oscillator, a temperature sensor circuit, and a proximity determination circuit. The variable gain oscillator has a gain that varies with the proximity of a target to a sensor coil, generates an oscillating electrical signal having a substantially constant amplitude magnitude, and generates an energy signal representative of the electrical energy needed to sustain oscillations. The temperature compensation circuit senses proximity sensor temperature and supplies a temperature signal representative thereof, and the proximity determination circuit, based on the energy signal, supplies a proximity signal representative of target proximity to the sensor coil. The proximity determination circuit includes a comparator and a fixed resistor network. The comparator circuit supplies the proximity signal.

  • Publication number: 20130173135
Abstract: Systems and methods for isolating a performance anomaly within one or more line replaceable units (LRUs) on a gas turbine engine by monitoring the start up transient are presented. The system comprises a set of sensors, an anomaly detector and a fault isolation reasoner. Each sensor of the set monitors at least one operating parameter of at least one engine component. The anomaly detector is configured to detect an anomaly in a component by comparing a particular value of an operating parameter to a base line value of that parameter. The specific cause of the startup anomaly is isolated utilizing a set of component reasoners that is based on the nature of the detected anomaly. The key events during the engine startup are identified by the combination of monitoring physically relevant phases of a startup and monitoring the engine control schedule. The values at these key events are used for comparing at the anomaly detector.
