Patent number: 5131491Abstract: A descent controller (30) for lowering a load along a rope (32). Controller is a friction cylinder or capstan (31) of a length adapted to receive a plurality of turns of rope (32) between top and bottom end plates (34, 35) adjacent the upper and lower ends of said cylinder which overhang the cylinder (31) and define radial slots (40, 41) sized to loosely receive the rope. An upwardly narrowing tapered slot (44) defined diametrically through the capstan (31) receives and releasably grips the rope. An annular clamp ring (48) is slidably mounted on the cylinder (31) and defines a radial aperture (49) which loosely receives the rope as it exits from the tapered slot (44). A spring (41) biases the ring (48) upwardly along the said friction cylinder (31) for releasably wedging the rope (32) in the tapered slot.Type: GrantFiled: February 7, 1991Date of Patent: July 21, 1992Assignee: Frost Engineering Development Corp.Inventors: Horace M. Varner, Ernest L. Stech, Richard H. Frost

Patent number: 5070962Abstract: An egress and evacuation harness consisting of a single piece of strong, flexible material cut to a generally sector-shaped T-shaped pattern, the ends of which are secured together to form a seat. A shoulder strap secures a wearer in the seat.Type: GrantFiled: July 18, 1990Date of Patent: December 10, 1991Assignee: Frost Engineering Development CorporationInventor: Horace M. Varner

Patent number: 5038888Abstract: A descent controller for lowering a load along a rope from an elevated position to a relatively lower position. The controller is a friction cylinder or capstan or a length adapted to receive a plurality of turns of rope between top and bottom end plates attached respectively adjacent the upper and lower ends of said cylinder. The end plates overhang the cylinder and define radial slots sized to loosely receive the rope. An upwardly narrowing tapered slot defined diametrically through the capstan receives and grips the rope. An annular clamp ring is slidably mounted on the cylinder and defines a radial aperture which loosely receives the rope as it exits from said tapered slot. A spring biases the ring upwardly along said friction cylinder for releasably wedging the rope in the tapered slot. A gripping cylinder is secured to the ring for sliding said ring along the friction cylinder to release said rope from the narrow end of said tapered slot.Type: GrantFiled: July 18, 1990Date of Patent: August 13, 1991Assignee: Frost Engineering Development Corp.Inventors: Horace M. Varner, Ernest L. Stech, Richard H. Frost

Patent number: 4938435Abstract: A personnel lowering or descent control device. The device includes a housing adapted to be secured to a person intending to descend from a higher to a lower elevation, and containing a line adapted to be secured at one end to a fixed point at said higher elevation. The line is wound on a reel rotatably mounted in said housing. A brake assembly, including a centrifugal brake controls the rate of rotation of said reel and thereby the rate of descent. A mechanical brake on said housing provides a manual control of the rate of rotation of the line supply reel. The descent line is trained on a plurality of capstans mounted within the housing for absorbing energy and providing a capstan ratio effective to reduce applied line tension to slow the descent of an object supported by the said descent device.Type: GrantFiled: December 30, 1988Date of Patent: July 3, 1990Assignee: Frost Engineering Development CorporationInventors: Horace M. Varner, Ernest L. Stech

Patent number: 4883146Abstract: A descent control device for lowering a load along a rope from an elevated position at which said rope is anchored to a relatively lower position. The device includes a vertical friction capstan such as a drum, shaft or cylinder, of a length adapted to receive a plurality of turns of rope wrapped therearound. Top and bottom end plates are attached respectively adjacent the upper and lower ends of the capstan; each having a portion overhanging the surface of the capstan and defining apertures sized to loosely receive the rope. The bottom aperture includes arcuate slot which tapers as it follows the contour of the capstan. A hook or eye depends from the lower end of the capstan for attaching a load carrying device. A locking end plate is rotatably mounted on the capstan below the lower end plate and includes an aperture for loosely receiving the rope.Type: GrantFiled: December 30, 1988Date of Patent: November 28, 1989Assignee: Frost Engineering Development CorporationInventors: Horace M. Varner, Ernest L. Stech

Patent number: 4431063Abstract: A drive mechanism for a drill provides both rotational drive and axial feed for a drill of substantial diameter such as those used to drill holes for roof bolts in mine shafts. A plurality of sprockets carry two chains of drive links which interlock around the drill shaft with each drive link having depressions which mate with scroll-like projections on the drill shaft. For axial feed, the sprockets are driven from worm drives in separate housings on each side of the chains, the worm drives being driven from gears in a gearbox which are connected through a differential gearset to a hydraulic motor. A second hydraulic motor also drives through the differential gearset to rotate the drill shaft and the entire drive chain assembly. A large diameter face seal serves as the partition between the chain drive assembly and the gearbox.Type: GrantFiled: October 9, 1981Date of Patent: February 14, 1984Assignee: The Bendix CorporationInventors: Michael O. Dressel, Horace M. Varner, LaValle V. Brummert, John W. Bodle

Patent number: 4142596Abstract: A special drive link permits drilling of holes of different diameters with the same drill drive. The drill shaft has a helical pattern of scroll-like projections for removal of cuttings. The drill drive mechanism includes sprockets carrying two chains of drive links which mate with the helical scroll projections to move the drill shaft axially, and projections on the drive links mate together at the center to hold the drive links tightly around the drill shaft. The drill shaft is formed with an elongated axial groove separating the helical projections and defining notch surfaces which mate with projections or tangs extending inwardly from the hollow portion of the drive links where they surround the drill shaft. Rotation of the mechanism results in transferring the rotating force through the sides of the inwardly extending projection of the drive links to the corresponding notch surfaces of the scroll projections.Type: GrantFiled: September 9, 1977Date of Patent: March 6, 1979Assignee: The Bendix CorporationInventors: Michael O. Dressel, Horace M. Varner

Patent number: 4141225Abstract: An articulated shaft assembly particularly useful in forming a flexible drill for drilling vertical holes in a mine shaft roof employs interengaging shaft sections whose opposed ends form a ball and socket mating surface connection with a plurality of driving members interposed between opposed spherical surfaces and with the driving members locking the shaft in axial alignment for torque transmission in one direction while permitting torque transmission in the other direction with the shafts angularly misaligned.Type: GrantFiled: February 10, 1977Date of Patent: February 27, 1979Assignee: The United States of America as represented by the Secretary of the InteriorInventor: Horace M. Varner
