  • Patent number: 4407701
Abstract: Apparatus for treating gases produced from the conversion of coal, e.g., from carbonization of coal, to remove the undesirable constituents thereof is disclosed. The method involves passing the hot raw gases from the coal conversation process over a coke bed at a temperature of more than 1100.degree. K. The coke bed is located in the coal gasification reactor and is provided with an ordinary air supply. The subject method achieves a significant reduction in undesirable constituents in the gas and eliminates the need for auxiliary gas treatment systems, oxygen production systems and the like.

  • Patent number: 4282066
Abstract: Coal, either as coal fines or as coal briquettes, is introduced into a coking chamber and is thereat exposed to microwave radiation to transform the coal into hot coke. Preferably, the microwave radiation is at a frequency of from twenty to 3000 MHz. The hot coke is then passed to a cooling zone whereat photocells absorb radiant energy from the hot coke and transform the thus absorbed radiant energy into electricity.

  • Patent number: 4238891
Abstract: An arrangement for drying and preheating coking gas has a transport tube for transporting coal in a stream of a carrier gas, and a feed conduit for feeding hot gas into the transport tube. The feed conduit is movable relative to the tube so as to vary the conditions of feeding the hot gas into the transport tube. For this purpose, feed conduit may be connected with the transport tube by a ball-and-socket joint, so that it can be movable relative to the transport tube in circumferential and axial directions of the latter. The feed conduit may be composed by a plurality of conduit members located in the transport tube and one in the other, and movable relative to transport tube in the axial direction of the latter.

  • Patent number: 4178150
Abstract: Coal is passed in a two-stage process through a drying and heating zone. The coal coming from the drying zone is separated from the heat carrier gas which is then passed into the atmosphere after going through an electrodust separator. The dried coal is delivered into the heating zone. The hot gas for the heating zone is furnished by a combustion device. The exhaust gas from the heating zone is separated from the heated coal which is recovered while the exhaust gas is passed back into the drying zone. Part of the hot combustion gas coming from the combustion chamber is branched off and passed into the exhaust gas coming out of the drying zone either directly behind the drying zone or behind the separator for separating the dried coal from the exhaust gas. The temperature of the exhaust gas from the drying zone is thus prevented from sinking below the sulfuric acid dewpoint or water vapor dewpoint which might result in corrosive damage to the apparatus, particularly to the electrodust separator.

  • Patent number: 4145257
Abstract: A device for automatically detaching and/or loosening coke within a coke oven chamber, particularly such a chamber of the type having an inclined or obliquely extending floor, includes a track support adapted to be mounted at a position confronting the coke removal opening of the coke oven chamber. An elongated poking bar is supported by the track support and has at a first end thereof a stoking or broaching head for abutting or scraping coke within the chamber. A trolley is mounted on the track support for movement therealong, and the poking bar is pivoted to the trolley. A reversibly operable cable drive moves the trolley and thus the poking bar along the track support from an initial position whereat the poking bar is positioned outside of the chamber to an operative position wherein the broaching head of the poking bar is inserted into the chamber to abut against coke therein.

  • Patent number: 4084712
Abstract: Coal is first fed into the oven chamber through a plurality of first filling units of a charging truck into first filling openings until the bases of the resultant cone-shaped charges are approximately in contact. Thereafter, coal is fed through a plurality of second filling units of the charging truck into a plurality of second filling openings positioned between adjacent first filling openings. The above operations are repeated until the oven chamber is filled. The coarser coal is thus distributed in a plurality of diagonal layers in the oven chamber. Filling gas is removed from the oven chamber during feeding through filling openings and filling units of the charging which are not being employed for feeding.

  • Patent number: 3975240
Abstract: Separate temperature measuring elements are positioned on the outer wall surface of the riser of at least one oven chamber of a coke oven. During production of coke, the temperatures measured will be different. Upon completion of the coking process the difference between the measured temperatures will lessen to zero.
