Patent number: 4995253Abstract: Method, control, and apparatus for taking up a billet produced in an extrusion or tube-making press includes applying a controlled pull-away tractive force, which keeps the emerging billet straight and does not affect the formation of the billet, increasing the pull-away tractive force in proportion to the extruded billet length, unit length weight and coefficient of friction between the billet and the delivery table, superimposing the pull-away tractive force upon the take-up tractive force determined from the cross-section and flow behavior in the die. After a billet has been separated and withdrawn from the die, the pull-away force and the length of the emerging billet are measured and the pull-away force, divided by the billet length, is entered as a set value for the specific profile frictional force to be multiplied by the billet length, which is determined by a path measurement, when extruding a subsequent billet of the same nominal cross section.Type: GrantFiled: March 17, 1989Date of Patent: February 26, 1991Assignees: SMS Sutton, Inc., SMS Hasenclever GmbHInventors: Horst Groos, Karl-Heinz Schutte

Patent number: 4750345Abstract: For recycling the dies and pressure plates, in an extrusion press designed to perform both direct and indirect extrusion, a common conveyor extends beside the press between a device for stripping extrusion residue from the dies, and a device for separating extrusion residue from pressure plates. A first transfer arm is provided to transfer a pressure plate and direct extrusion residue from the press axis to the conveying means for conveyance to the pressure plate-separating device. The same transfer arm serves to transfer stripped dies from the conveying means to the press axis. A second transfer arm removes the die, pressure plate and extrusion residue after indirect extrusion, to the conveying means, which conveys the die to the die stripper, and the pressure plate and extrusion residue to the device for separating the extrusion residue from the pressure plate. Separated pressure plates are recycled to a magazine and then to the press axis for re-use.Type: GrantFiled: April 28, 1987Date of Patent: June 14, 1988Assignee: SMS Hasenclever Maschinenfabrik GmbHInventors: Horst Groos, Siegfried Blasche

Patent number: 4484466Abstract: After extrusion in an indirect metal extrusion press a removal arm, the end of which carries a holding sleeve for a die, a discard and a closing plate, is swung into the press axis between the billet carrier and the closing ram. The sleeve is divided into two transversely to the press axis. One part is fixed to the arm and clamps the die, while the other part receives the discard and the closing plate and can be displaced axially in the direction of the closing ram from the fixed sleeve part, the discard and the closing plate attached thereto being released. An hydraulically displaceable clamping seat provided on the removal arm and comprising respective pairs of grippers moves from below up to the closing plate and the discard and embraces them. During the operation to shear the discard from the extruded billet present in the clamped die the discard and the closing plate are moved downwards in a controlled manner.Type: GrantFiled: January 18, 1983Date of Patent: November 27, 1984Assignee: SMS Schloemann-Siemag AktiengesellschaftInventors: Horst Groos, Gunther Wintzen

Patent number: 4442694Abstract: A floor-mounted forging press has a static piston arranged on the top beam and a cylinder which slides on the piston and forms a toolholder, and a bore extending through the piston for supplying pressure medium to the cylinder. The piston is hollow and is swivelly mounted by means of ball cups at the lower end of the piston and on the top beam and a thrust bearing member between the ball cups, the piston being held in the vertical position on the top beam with the aid of retaining means. One form of retaining means is a partially resilient pressure medium pipe which holds the piston. Alternatively pins, mounted by means of spherical surfaces, suspend the piston by way of a flange on the piston and are resiliently biased to hold the piston against the top beam in a free-play, resilient and freely movable manner, a bore being provided through the ball cups and thrust bearing member.Type: GrantFiled: December 1, 1981Date of Patent: April 17, 1984Assignee: SMS Schloemann-Siemag AktiengesellschaftInventors: Hermann Fusser, Horst Groos, Heinz Schmoll
