    Abstract: Fatigue in structural elements is determined by measuring the loss in specular reflection in a foil of polished metal secured to an exposed surface of the tested object, the elastic limit of the foil material under shearing stresses being lower than that of the tested object, and the foil consisting either of a single crystal or of polycrystalline material of uniform, small grain size.
