    Abstract: In a cutting insert, cutting edge (9) is formed by the junction of a chip face (21, 22) and a flank (15). The flank is an extension of a straight portion (11) of a side face (5, 6) which begins at the base (2). Rather than remaining straight throughout the side face, straight portion (11) leads into a transitional face (13) used to form a strip (17), the face of which is the flank (15). Thus, the flank (15) is raised relative to an imaginary lengthening of the side face portion (11).
