    Abstract: A draft gear assembly is disclosed alone and in combination with a draft sill and a coupler. The draft sill has front and rear stops defining a draft gear pocket. The draft gear assembly has a yoke, a coupler follower, a rear follower, a front resilient member and a back resilient member. The yoke has top and bottom stops. The coupler follower is biased against the yoke top and bottom stops. The draft gear assembly also includes a center rod that extends through the yoke, through the back resilient member and through the rear follower. Prior to installation on a railcar, there is a shortening member on the center rod. The length of the assembly between the shortening member and the front of the coupler follower is slightly less than the longitudinal length of the draft gear pocket. After installation, the rear follower is positioned against rear stops of the draft sill. After installation, the yoke, coupler and coupler follower each have a neutral position and a full buff position.

    Abstract: Center filler plates for mounting on draft sills of railway car underframes are disclosed. The center filler plates have four pockets surrounding a hub. The pockets are shallower than in the prior art, and the walls defining the pockets meet in radii having larger radii of curvature than in the prior art. The shallower pockets and larger radii of curvature facilitate removal of the casting from the molding sand in the cope and drag sections of the mold. The formation of burned-in sand is limited in the present invention, and any burned-in sand that does form is also more easily removed from the center filler plates of the present invention. The base portion of the center filler plates is not as high as in the prior art. The ribs of the center filler plate and the walls of the hub are thicker than in the prior art to provide the needed strength to the center filler plates.

    Abstract: The present invention provides a lightweight draft sill end casting for use with railroad cars. The cast draft sill has side walls, front and rear stops, front and rear rib sets and a center plate that are cast as a unit. The draft sill has an open area between the tops of the side walls between the front and rear stops, with a cast metal span connecting the two side walls. The cast metal span may comprise one or more spacer bars or part of a top wall. The cast metal span is in the area between the planes of the front stops and the rear stops. The front and rear stops are spaced below the tops of the side walls. In one embodiment, there are additional lightener holes in each side wall between the ribs in the rear rib set and in the pocket. The total weight of the cast draft sill is not substantially greater than the weight of a comparable fabricated draft sill of substantially the same size, and has a greater fatigue life.

    Abstract: A draft sill end casting with a locking center pin is disclosed. The draft sill has an open member with an elongate channel aligned with the central aperture of its center plate. A support shelf is within the elongate channel. A center pin has an upper retainer key supported on the shelf, and the center pin extends through the elongate channel to the exterior of the draft sill. The lower end of the center pin has a slot. When mounted on a truck bolster, a lower retainer key is slid through slots in the bolster walls and through the slot in the lower end of the center pin. The two retainer keys, support shelf and bolster walls lock the center pin in position, limiting axial movement of the center pin and limit rotation of the center pin. Thus, the draft sill and truck bolster are locked together to limit relative vertical and horizontal movement between them. The shelf may include rotation stops to limit rotation of the upper retainer once it is in place.

    Abstract: A tapered wear liner and articulated connector using such a tapered wear liner are disclosed. The tapered wear liner supports an annular bearing that supports the male connecting member of the articulated connector. The tapered wear liner has an outer surface that may be shaped as the frustum of a cone or the frustum of a sphere. The female connecting member has a complementary shaped groove to receive the tapered wear liner. The female connecting member has a bottom wall with a substantially uniform thickness from the wear liner to the exterior surface of the female connecting member. A main pin connects the male and female connecting members together and a center pin is integral with the main pin and connected to the railroad car truck. The present invention is useful with railroad car trucks that have concave curved center plate areas.

    Abstract: The present invention provides a lightweight draft sill end casting for use with railroad cars. Weight reductions are achieved and adequate strength is maintained by using a set of front ribs and back ribs, with angled top and bottom ribs. The back rib set has a single central rib along the central plane of the draft sill. A single horizontal center plate rib is also used in the area of the center plate. The side ribs at the center plate have larger lightener holes. Holes are also provided in the bottom wall of the casting. Larger lightener holes are provided in the area of the draft sill pocket. These holes are moved upwardly to lower the center of gravity of the draft sill. The draft stops may be spaced from the top wall of the draft sill and from the bottoms of the side walls.

    Abstract: A connection between a draft sill and a railway wheel truck is disclosed. The draft sill has a bottom and side walls extending up from the bottom. A center pin extends downward from the bottom to an exterior end surface. A boss encircles the center pin. The boss is attached to the outer surface of the center pin and to the bottom surface of the draft sill. The boss includes a plurality of ribs extending radially outward from the center pin. The total surface area of the horizontal surfaces of the boss and the center pin is less than the surface area of a standard center plate. The horizontal surfaces of the boss and center pin do not bear any vertical load under normal conditions, and no center plate is provided. The center pin and boss can be integral, and can be made to extend upward from the truck bolster to be received in an opening in the draft sill.

    Abstract: A railway car coupler includes a knuckle that is rotatable about a pivot pin. The knuckle is comprised of a tail section, a hub and a nose section. The knuckle is usually made of steel in a casting operation. The pivot pin opening in the knuckle is cylindrical with generally straight walls with a reduced diameter centrally located cylindrical relief area. The nose has a blunt end, and a thicker internal reinforcing section is made by having an end of the face core extend a lesser distance toward the pivot pin opening. The transition area between the tail and the nose is formed by parabolic shaped upper and lower sections.

    Abstract: Slack-free or slackless coupling systems have application in various types of coupling arrangements such as drawbars, articulated connectors, and E and F type couplers. The gravity wedge that takes up any slack developed when the system components wear, maintains a constant longitudinal force on the follower block and coupler member butt-end interface. However, under high buff loading, that mated interface develops high friction forces during curving and angling. It has been found that the lateral component of these friction forces can become great enough to cause wheel lift at the wheel/rail interface. The present invention reduces that component of friction by greatly reducing the coefficient of friction at the coupler/follower block interface by supplying a lubricant between these surfaces.

    Abstract: The present invention involves the addition of a device attached to each of the follower block side walls in order to prevent metal-to-metal contact between the follower block side walls and the center sill side walls. The preventative device comprises an elastomeric wear pad attached to a base plate, a base plate being anchored to each of the follower block side walls. The pads are made of a softer, low-friction material, compared to the carbon steel side walls. Since the elastomeric wear pads are softer than the center sill side walls, only the restrictive means will wear, thereby preventing destruction of the center sill side walls no matter how much slack has been developed in the coupling system. The present invention is also adaptable to either E or F type couplers.

    Abstract: A railway car with a slackless drawbar arrangement for unit trainservice and the like is provided and includes a drawbar having a section which is fabricated. The fabricated intermediate section is cut from a section of seamless pipe or tubing or can be fabricated from plate, while the coupling end pieces attached to each end of the shank are cast members made from typical casting methods. The coupling end pieces can be cast into standard fixed or rotatable drawbar ends or even be a combination thereof with rotational capability. The geometric shape of the intermediate section is varied, depending upon the application, so that resistance to torsional or bending loads is maximized. The fabricated shank portion is hollow, as well as part of the body of the coupling end pieces, thereby reducing the railcar's weight and costs to manufacture.

    Abstract: The present invention relates to a railway car coupler arrangement whereby a standard yoke, follower, and draft gear are removed from the center sill and replaced with a short yoke member, a spacer block member and slackless drawbar arrangement, namely, a pocket casting wedge shim, and follwer, easily converting the coupler arrangement to a drawbar arrangement without modifying the center sill. The short yoke member, spacer block and slackless arrangement fit exactly within the space formerly occupied by the draft gear pocket casing. The drawbar arrangement maintains the same degrees of angling freedom as the coupler since the drawbar is connected and pivoted from the same pin location as when the coupler was installed. The short yoke member is also designed to more uniformly distribute draft loads to the center sill by transferring forces from the connecting pin into the short yoke member, which in turn transfers those forces into abutting center sill front stops, left intact from the coupler arrangement.
