  • Patent number: 7016375
Abstract: An integrated connection admission control (CAC) and bandwidth on demand control (BoD) system for allocating the resource of a common medium uplink of a multiple access (MA) asynchronous network segment, wherein the CAC allocates static resource to all virtual connections (VCs) or groupings of VCs accepted by the CAC and books dynamic resource to the VCs or groupings of VCs that require guaranteed dynamic resource, and the BoD allocates dynamic resource to VCs or to groupings of VCs requesting dynamic resource in such a way that all VCs or groupings of VCs requesting dynamic resource are dynamically allocated requested dynamic resource up to at least the guaranteed dynamic resource which has been booked for them by the CAC.

  • Patent number: 6549530
Abstract: A multiple access asynchronous network segment for providing network access to a plurality of end systems over a shared medium uplink to a satellite headend supported by a network controller, wherein the network controller allocates part of the uplink resource and the satellite headend allocates part of the uplink resource on a temporary basis in response to end systems making a new request for uplink resource. Also provided is a signalling system for use in a multiple access asynchronous network segment for providing network access to a plurality of end systems over a shared medium uplink to an intermediate. Also provided is an Integrated Addressing and packet Segmentation And Reassembly (IASAR) system for use in a multiple access asynchronous network segment for providing network access for a plurality of end systems to an intermediate system over a shared medium.

  • Patent number: 6026092
Abstract: A switch that has a plurality of inputs in which cells are received at these inputs. Each cell received at the inputs of the switch contain routing information. A routing means is employed to route the cells received at the inputs of the switch to outputs using routing information in which a number of the cells are misrouted by the routing means during the process of routing the cells to the outputs. Bus means is employed to route a cell to the destination in which the bus means is connected to the routing means. The bus means routes misrouted cells that are misrouted from the destination by some selected amount.

  • Patent number: 5949778
Abstract: An apparatus for routing a plurality of cells. The apparatus includes a plurality of inputs, wherein the plurality of cells are received at the inputs. Each of the cells contains routing information. The apparatus also includes a plurality of outputs, wherein the outputs are associated with a plurality of destinations such that each output corresponds to a destination within the plurality of destinations. The apparatus employs a routing means for routing the cells received by the inputs through the apparatus to the outputs using the routing information contained in the cells. The routing means includes a number of single path switching matrixes in which each single path switching matrix has a plurality of stages. A portion of the these stages are dilated such that two or more cells may be routed to the same destination.

  • Patent number: 5914945
Abstract: A method and system are provided for calculating the most efficient bandwidth allocation for multimedia traffic under aggregate traffic conditions within a shared transmission medium, such as an ATM network, in a manner which maximizes long term revenue. First, the total number of service groups within the network is specified by a network operator or a network designer. Each service group may contain multiple different types of communication traffic. Thereafter, for each service group, the number of users who utilize the services within that service group is determined. The average idle sojourn time and average burst sojourn time for each system state are then determined for each service group. Next, a specification of the peak rate, the probability that a user will access the service during a specified busy period, and an average session duration are determined.

  • Patent number: 5886984
Abstract: A method and system are provided for calculating the total service capacity for multimedia traffic under aggregate traffic conditions within a shared transmission medium, such as an ATM network. A total number of different types of telecommunication traffic is specified by the network operator or network designer. Each different type of network telecommunication traffic is referred to as a service. Next, each week is partitioned into several busy periods. This partitioning is provided by the network operator and may include multiple days, for example: Monday-Friday; and, Saturday-Sunday. Thereafter, for each busy day described above, the day is further partitioned into several busy periods, each period discernible from a previous period by the level of activity expected within the network at that time. For example, 8:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m.; and, 5:00 p.m.-7:00 a.m. Once again, this information is provided by the network operator or network designer.

  • Patent number: 5886907
Abstract: The method and system of the present invention can be utilized to model aggregate multimedia traffic within a shared transmission medium, such as an ATM network, so that customer expectations can be met and the network can be constructed and utilized efficiently. A total number of different traffic services, as well as a maximum number of sources of each service are specified by a network operator. Next, a quality of service characterization for each service is determined, based upon available standards. Average sojourn time for each service is determined by modeling each Constant Bit Rate (CBR) service as a Renewal Process, each Variable Bit Rate (VBR) real-time service as a multistate Modulated Discrete Process and each Variable Bit Rate (VBR) non-real-time service as an On-Off Process. Sojourn mean times can thereafter be obtained from measurements or published standards.

  • Patent number: 5883819
Abstract: A method and system for assessing quality of service for multimedia traffic under aggregate traffic conditions in a shared transmission network, such as an ATM network. A total number of different traffic services as well as a maximum number of sources for each traffic service are specified by a network operator/designer. Next, for each traffic service a specification of peak rate, average idle sojourn time and an average burst sojourn time are determined, either based upon available standards or calculated based upon models of the traffic services. The total available system bandwidth is specified by a network operator/designer. Finally, the number and size of queues utilized for receiving packetized telecommunication traffic within the network are specified.

  • Patent number: 5870396
Abstract: A switch that includes inputs for receiving cells connected to a first storage means for storing the cells received at the inputs. The first storage means includes a plurality of portions in which each portion is associated with an input. Additionally, each portion has a number of segments in which a cell may be stored. Additionally, the switch includes an address translation means for assigning a destination from a plurality of destinations to each cell received at the inputs. A second storage means is included in the switch. This second storage means has a number of sections in which each section is associated with a destination within the plurality of destinations and each section includes a number of segments. For each cell assigned a destination, the second storage means stores information identifying the location of the cell within the first storage means. This information is stored in a segment in the section associated with the destination assigned to the cell.
