  • Patent number: 5533979
Abstract: A thin blade shaped tool for the one-handed removal of a needle from an end of a syringe. The tool has an aperture in the center thereof for slideably mounting the tool on an end portion of the syringe, adjacent the needle, and sides extending outwardly from the syringe for a one-handed removal of said needle with a pair of fingers of a hand which holds the syringe. The sides have spaced apart ends and concave center portions for resting the syringe on a patient or IV line during an alignment of the needle with an injection site.

  • Patent number: 5483972
Abstract: A closure device for performing a routine biopsy procedure without the use of sutures or butterfly bandages. The method and closure device controls bleeding, repairs the biopsy site, reduces the likelihood of inducing excessive scarring and reduces the handling of tissue. The closure device is comprised of a circular sponge made from an absorbable foam material which swells and fills up the defect left by biopsy and an applicator for implanting the sponge into the biopsy site. The sponge is pre-cut to a diameter which approximately corresponds to the diameter of the punch which is used for excising a biopsy specimen. A fibrous cotton wad is attached to the other end of the applicator. After the specimen is excised the sponge is implanted into the space from which the specimen was taken. A slight pressure is applied to the sponge with the fibrous cotton wad for approximately 30 to 60 seconds to stop any excess bleeding.

  • Patent number: 5394886
Abstract: A plug and method for controlling bleeding and repairing a circular wound caused by the excising of a specimen of skin from a patient with a biopsy punch. The plug is a cylindrical porous sponge made from a gelatin material which, when implanted into a wound, swells, absorbs blood and is completely absorbed by the patient with little tissue reaction. By completely filling the bleeding site, the plug promotes healing without the necessity of suturing. In the first aspect of the invention, a sterile cylindrical plug is provided having about the same diameter as the biopsy punch used for excising the specimen. In a second aspect of the invention, after a specimen has been excised with a biopsy punch, the cylindrical plug is cut from a pad of the gelatin material with the same punch and implanted into the wound.

  • Patent number: 5325857
Abstract: A device and method for performing a routine skin biopsy. In the first aspect of the invention, the device is comprised of a syringe, a detachable needle mounted on one end portion of the syringe, a biopsy punch attached to the same end portion which is accessible only when the needle is removed from the syringe, and a small pad of an absorbable sponge. The needle is removed from the syringe after a patient has been anesthetized with the syringe to expose the biopsy punch. A biopsy specimen is excised with the punch. Thereafter, a cylindrical plug is cut from the pad of absorbable sponge with the biopsy punch and implanted into the biopsy site. In a second aspect of the invention, a small cylindrical sponge is stored in the center of the biopsy punch and is implanted into the biopsy site with the syringe after a specimen has been excised with the punch.
