  • Publication number: 20060078044
Abstract: Methods and apparatuses for reducing effects of impulse noise in a DSL transmitter receiver device are described. • Publication number: 20060067388
Abstract: Embodiments of an apparatus, system, and method are described for a multi-carrier communication system that detects for impulse noise present on a transmission medium. Values of peak error samples may be measured to determine an approximate magnitude of the average peak error samples present on a transmission medium. An average error value of all of the error samples may be measured to determine a standard deviation of a Gaussian distribution of background noise. An amount of peak error samples may be compared to a threshold value that is based upon a standard deviation derived from the background noise to determine if impulse noise is present on a particular tone.

  • Publication number: 20060062379
Abstract: Apparatuses, systems, and methods for a multi-carrier communication system that detects and reduces an echo from a non-linear element present on the transmission medium. In an embodiment, a training period is established between a first transmitter-receiver device and a second transmitter-receiver device in the discrete multiple tone system that separates communication signals into two or more seperste frequency bands. Noise caused by an echo generated by a non-linear element present on the transmission medium is detected during the training period. The significance of the non-linear echo contribution to the overall ambient noise level present in the system may be determined.

  • Publication number: 20060002457
Abstract: An apparatus, system, and method are described for multi-carrier communication using adaptive tone-pruning. The method may include transmitting a data-bearing signal over a plurality of tones on a communication loop within a plurality of communication loops and calculating a minimum tone cost according to a tone cost algorithm. The tone cost algorithm defines a tone cost associated with a selected tone within the plurality of tones. The tone cost of the selected tone is based on a predefined loading frequency and a signal-to-noise ration (SNR) of the selected tone. The method also may include determining a bit loading pattern for the data-bearing signal according to the minimum tone cost. This determination may occur in response to a determination that a minimum allowable transmission power is greater than a minimum required transmission power for the data-bearing signal.

  • Publication number: 20050190825
Abstract: In general, various methods and apparatus are described that use a multi-tone receiver. The multi-tone receiver detects data in a multiple tone signal. The receiver has a detector module to measure a noise power level present in the system and to detect for an asymmetric Gaussian noise source in the background noise. An equivalent noise power is obtained by applying a compensating gain factor to the asymmetrical noise source. The gain factor is used when the detector indicates that the asymmetric Gaussian noise source exists in the background noise. Any bit-loading algorithm that is based on a symmetric Guassian noise source assumption can also be used with asymmetrical Guassian noise sources if this gain factor is applied.

  • Publication number: 20050169357
Abstract: A method, system and apparatus for reliable multicarrier communication in the presence of timing phase error is disclosed. Phase noise due to a sampling-time phase mismatch between a transmitter device and a receiver device is measured in a signal. A Gaussian noise power level in the signal is determined, and a gain factor associated with the phase noise is calculated. The gain factor is applied to the Gaussian noise power level to calculate an equivalent noise power. In one aspect, the equivalent noise power is used to determine a signal-to-noise ratio. In another aspect, the signal is a multicarrier signal including a plurality of sub-carriers.

  • Patent number: 6446236
Abstract: A scheme (apparatus and methods) for recovering encoded data from a data signal representing one or more data symbols and subject to random errors and transient errors. A system in accordance with this scheme includes a transient error detector, a reliability detector, an erasure flagger, and a decoder. The transient error detector is coupled to receive the data signal and is configured to identify one or more characteristics (e.g., a starting location and a midpoint location) of a transient error (e.g., a TA) in the data signal. The reliability detector is configured to compute a reliability metric for each data symbol. The erasure flagger identifies erasures based upon signals received from the transient error detector and the reliability detector. The decoder is configured to treat a data symbol as an erasure or as a valid data symbol based upon the output of the erasure flagger.
