    Abstract: It is sometimes desirable to cure rubber compositions utilizing non-sulfur curing agents. The subject invention reveals rubber compositions which can be cured without utilizing sulfur or sulfur containing compounds. The subject invention more specifically disclosed a rubber composition which can be crosslinked by heating which is comprised of (1) at least one rubber having pendant blocked isocyanate groups bound thereto; and (2) at least one compound which contains at least 2 Zerewitinoff active hydrogens.This invention also discloses crosslinking of elastomer compounds containing (1) at least one rubber having functionalized groups containing at least one Zerewitinoff active hydrogen and (2) at least one compound which contains at least two blocked isocyanate groups. This invention also discloses self-curing elastomers containing both blocked isocyanate groups and groups containing at least one active Zerewitinoff hydrogen.

A blend of polypropylene with nitrile rubber which has been cocured with an N-chlorothio-sulfonamide modified EPDM rubber is a representative example of such a polymer alloy.

    Abstract: This invention is directed to the preparation of polymerizable monomers that are prepared from 1-(1-isocyanato-1-methylethyl)-3-(1-methylethenyl) benzene (m-TMI) and 1-(1-isocyanato-1-methylethyl)-4-(1-methylethenyl) benzene (p-TMI). The monomers prepared from m- and p-TMI can contain numerous chemical moieties, and when polymerized, produce polymers that have chemically bonded to the polymeric backbone the functional moiety. More specifically, these TMI derived monomers may contain chain breaking antioxidant moieties, peroxide decomposing antioxidant moieties, ultraviolet stabilizing moieties, triplet quenching moieties, and other chemical moieties that are useful in polymers.

This invention is also concerned with cured polyurethanes prepared by reacting the aromatic diamine of this invention with a mixture of organic polyisocyanate and polymeric polyol containing an excess of said polyisocyanate or with a prepolymer of said polyisocyanate and a polymeric polyol. The use of the curative of this invention provides sufficient pot life for making castings as well as foams.

    Abstract: Diisopropenylbenzene is a monomer that can be used in the preparation of many useful polymers and is also a chemical intermediate that can be employed in a number of chemical processes. Diisopropenylbenzene is normally synthesized by the dehydrogenation of diisopropylbenzene. Unfortunately in this dehydrogenation process a number of olefinic impurities are produced as by-products. This invention discloses a process for the separation of diisopropenylbenzene from these impurities and for recycling some of the impurities.

    Abstract: It has unexpectedly been discovered that 1-(1-isocyanato-1-methylethyl)-3-(1-methylethenyl) benzene(m-TMI) can be emulsion copolymerized with other monomers into useful polymers. For example, it has been found that m-TMI can be emulsion copolymerized with diene monomers to produce polymers which contain pendant isocyanate groups. Such pendant isocyanate groups are useful in a variety of applications. For instance, such pendant isocyanate groups can be utilized as sites to which chemical agents, such as antidegradants, can be bound to the polymer. Elastomers which contain such pendant isocyanate groups are of value since they can be crosslinked without employing sulfur. Elastomers of this type which contain pendant isocyanate groups can also potentially be thermo-reversibly crosslinked.

    Abstract: There is disclosed a process for the production of alkylated hydroxyanisoles which consists of dehydrogenating para-isopropylphenol to para-isopropenylphenol which is then reacted with a methylating agent to yield para-isopropenylanisole which is then treated with acidic hydrogen peroxide to yield para-hydroxyanisole which is then treated with an alkylating agent to yield the alkylated hydroxyanisole. The process of this invention is especially useful for the synthesis of the food preservative butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA).

    Abstract: This invention discloses a process for the separation of diisopropenylbenzene from organic impurities in a dehydrogenation mixture comprising: (1) hydrogenating said dehydrogenation mixture to a maximum isopropenylstyrene concentration of no more than about 5% by weight in the presence of a rhodium catalyst and hydrogen to form a hydrogenated dehydrogenation mixture, followed by, (2) fractionally distilling said hydrogenated dehydrogenation mixture under conditions sufficient to separate said diisopropenylbenzene from said organic impurities in said hydrogenated dehydrogenation mixture.
