  • Patent number: 6208037
Abstract: An electric power-generating assembly is disclosed. The assembly includes a sill wall constructed within the bed of the waterway and at least one waterwheel-driven generating unit supported directly downstream of the sill wall. The waterwheel generating unit includes a waterwheel, a chute and an electric generating unit. The electric generator unit is mounted axially within the waterwheel and includes a rotor disposed axially within a stator and drive means operably connecting the waterwheel to the rotor.

  • Patent number: 6205323
Abstract: A jury paging notification system is disclosed. The system includes a plurality of juror pagers to be carried by potential jurors and a pager control panel monitoring each of the plurality of juror pagers. In use, potential jurors carrying a juror pager are permitted to go on with their regular lives and leave the courthouse based upon the understanding that attendance at a courthouse is required within a specified time period after being paged.

  • Patent number: 5440175
Abstract: An electric generator assembly driven by a waterwheel wherein the axial length of the waterwheel is substantially greater than the diameter thereof and contains a speed-increasing device for driving a high speed generator. The assembly is supported from a bridge spanning the full axial length of the waterwheel and the width of the stream and said bridge also supports an adjustable chute extending from the dam crest to the waterwheel. The waterwheel has longitudinal buckets designed to develop maximum energy over a wide range of flow of water and also discharge debris. The buckets are vented as necessary to improve filling and discharge and also minimize vibration. The complete bridge assembly is supported adjacent opposite ends by hydraulic cylinder units connected to and adapted to raise the unitary bridge, chute and waterwheel assembly above increased tailwater levels to reduce drag and rotating friction.

  • Patent number: 4648244
Abstract: An open flume installation for a hydraulic turbine is disclosed having an open flume defined by a floor, a pair of side walls and a back wall of a foundation structure. A water passageway is formed through the foundation with an outlet submerged within the tailwater and with an inlet formed through the floor of the flume adjacent the back wall. The inlet is provided with its axis inclined at a 45.degree. angle. A turbine runner is provided within the inlet for rotation about the axis. A generator is supported above the flume on a support structure spanning the side walls. An inclined shaft connects the runner and generator. The shaft and runner are supported for rotation by a conical vaned intake having its narrow portion surrounding the inlet and having its face portion extending between the side walls. A plurality of stay vanes project radially inwardly from the inner surface of the conical intake to a bearing housing which supports the shaft.

  • Patent number: 4599854
Abstract: An adjustable draft tube is disclosed for a hydraulic turbine installation. The draft tube includes a pair of fabricated box piers which are positioned in a tailwater with the turbine outlet disposed between the piers. The piers are anchored to a tailwater floor and a powerhouse foundation wall. A roof is provided extending between opposing surfaces of the piers with an edge of the roof pivotally secured to the piers above the turbine outlet. The roof is pivotable between a first position with a downstream edge of the roof disposed beneath a predetermined low tailwater elevation and a second position with the downstream edge disposed between the low tailwater elevation and a predetermined high tailwater elevation.

  • Patent number: 4573827
Abstract: A hydraulic turbine installation is disclosed for a site comprising a dam having a floor and opposing sidewalls defining a spillway. The installation comprises a frame member which slideably engages the spillway floor on a downstream side of the dam. The frame member is slideable transverse to a direction of water flow through the spillway. A hydraulic turbine and connected generator are carried by the frame member. The frame member is provided with an intake such that when the frame member is in a first position within the spillway, water flow through the spillway is directed through the turbine runner. The frame member is slideable to a second position with the frame member out of the spillway and water flow through the spillway uninterrupted. Power actuated means such as hydraulic servomotors are provided for sliding the frame member between the first and second positions.

  • Patent number: 4319142
Abstract: A hydraulic turbine with water passageways and powerhouse for installation at a conventional spillway with gates includes a fabricated steel water passageway and cross beams which also serves as the lateral support between lifting devices which are operable to lift the installation to pass the upstream water discharge under flood conditions underneath the entire structure to reduce obstruction within the spillway.

  • Patent number: 4047831
Abstract: A method is disclosed for admitting high pressure air to the seals of a hydraulic turbine runner which is rotating in a gas such as air. The high pressure air reduces the temperature of the seal and at the same time maintains a desired air pressure in the runner casing. Means are also provided to permit evacuation of air or gas from the runner casing to reduce the pressure therein below atmospheric pressure to decrease the windage losses of the rotating runner and permit lower pressure cooling air or gas to be applied to the runner seals.
