Patent number: 9563516Abstract: Provided are techniques for managing backup operations from a client system to a primary server and secondary server. A determination is made at the client system of whether a state of the data on the secondary server permits a backup operation in response to determining that the primary server is unavailable when a force failover parameter is not set. The client system reattempts to connect to the primary server to perform the backup operation at the primary server in response to determining that the state of the data on the secondary server does not permit the backup operation. The client system performs the backup operation at the secondary server in response to determining that the state of the secondary server permits the backup operation.Type: GrantFiled: September 24, 2014Date of Patent: February 7, 2017Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: Matthew J. Anglin, David M. Cannon, Ken Eugene Hannigan, Kevin Patrick Hoyt, Erick Christian Kissel, Howard N. Martin, Michael Harry Segapeli

Publication number: 20170032006Abstract: Provided are a computer program product, system, and method for replication of versions of an object from a source storage to a target storage. A source retention policy indicates at least one source retention requirement to determine when to expire versions of an object at the source storage and a target retention policy indicates at least one target retention requirement to determine when to expire versions of the object at the target storage. The source and target retention requirements for versions of the object are different. The source retention policy is used to expire at least one version of the object at the source storage to satisfy the at least one source retention requirement. A number of the versions of the object maintained at the source storage and target storage differ due to the different source and target retention requirements.Type: ApplicationFiled: July 31, 2015Publication date: February 2, 2017Inventors: Matthew J. Anglin, David M. Cannon, Colin S. Dawson, Erick C. Kissel, Kristopher A. Larson, Howard N. Martin

Publication number: 20160147608Abstract: Provided are a computer program product, system, and method for using geographical location information to provision multiple target storages for a source device. A determination is made of a geographical location of the source device and a distance between the source device and each of the target storages and between each pair of target storages. A determination is further made of qualifying k-tuples of the target storages, wherein each k-tuple comprises a group of k target storages to which the source data is to be backed-up. A qualifying k-tuple has one target storage that satisfies a distance requirement with respect to the source device and a distance between any two target storages in the k-tuple satisfies the distance requirement. A selected qualifying k-tuple is indicated to use to backup the source data at the k target storages in the qualifying k-tuple.Type: ApplicationFiled: November 21, 2014Publication date: May 26, 2016Inventors: Matthew J. Anglin, David M. Cannon, Colin S. Dawson, Howard N. Martin

Publication number: 20160147610Abstract: Provided are a computer program product, system, and method for using geographical location information to provision one or more target storages for a source device. A determination is made of a geographical location of the source device and of geographical locations of the target storages. A determination is made of one of the target storages whose distance from the source device based on the geographical locations of the source device and the target storages satisfies at least one distance requirement. A configuration procedure is initiated to configure the source device and the determined target storage to have the source data backed-up from the source device to the target storage over the network.Type: ApplicationFiled: November 21, 2014Publication date: May 26, 2016Inventors: Matthew J. Patent number: 9251010Abstract: A mechanism is provided for caching backed-up data locally until successful replication of the backed-up data. Responsive to an indication to back up one or more pieces of identified data from a local storage device, a determination is made as to whether a primary storage device is available. Responsive to the primary storage device being available, the one or more pieces of identified data are backed up to the primary storage device and a local replication cache. Responsive to the backed-up data being replicated from the primary storage device to a secondary storage device, the backed-up data is removed from the local replication cache.Type: GrantFiled: March 13, 2013Date of Patent: February 2, 2016Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: Avishai H. Patent number: 8838529Abstract: A source server maintains a replication rule specifying a condition for a replication attribute and a replication action to take if the condition with respect to the replication attribute is satisfied, wherein the replication action indicates to include or exclude the object having an attribute value for the replication attribute that satisfies the condition. For each of the objects, the replication rule is applied by determining an attribute value of the object corresponding to the replication attribute in the replication rule and determining whether the determined attribute value satisfies the condition for the replication attribute defined in the determined replication rule. The replication action on the object in response to determining that the determined attribute value satisfies the condition for the replication attribute.Type: GrantFiled: August 30, 2011Date of Patent: September 16, 2014Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: Matthew J. Patent number: 8788466Abstract: One aspect of the present invention includes enabling the efficient transfer of deduplicated data between storage pools in a storage management system without unnecessary reassembly and deduplication of data objects. In one embodiment, the storage management system tracks deduplication information for the data chunks of data objects within an index at the storage management system level, in addition to tracking storage information for each data object within another index at the storage management system level. The data chunk deduplication information is then accessible by any storage pool. Accordingly, transfers of the data objects and data chunks of the data object are easily facilitated, even between non-deduplicating and deduplicating storage pools.Type: GrantFiled: August 5, 2008Date of Patent: July 22, 2014Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: Matthew J. Anglin, David M. Cannon, Howard N. Martin

Patent number: 8738575Abstract: Systems and methods for retrieving data from a storage system having a plurality of storage pools are provided. The method comprises processing configurable data retrieval instructions to determine a first storage pool from which target backup data is to be retrieved, in response to a data restore request; and retrieving the target backup data from the first storage pool to satisfy the restore request. The configurable data retrieval instructions are managed by a source external to the storage system with administrative authority to change the configurable data retrieval instructions to optimize data restoration from the storage system.Type: GrantFiled: September 17, 2007Date of Patent: May 27, 2014Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: Matthew J. Patent number: 8639663Abstract: In each of a number of passes to deduplicate a data object, a transaction is started. Where an offset into the object has previously been set, the offset is retrieved; otherwise, the offset is set to reference a beginning of the object. A portion of the object beginning at the offset is deduplicated until an end-of-transaction criterion has been satisfied. The transaction is ended to commit deduplication; where the object has not yet been completely deduplicated, the offset is moved just past where deduplication has already occurred. The object is locked during each pass; other processes cannot access the object during each pass, but can access the object between passes. Each pass is relatively short, so the length of time in which the object is inaccessible is relatively short. By comparison, deduplicating an object within a single pass prevents other processes from accessing the object for a longer time.Type: GrantFiled: January 5, 2013Date of Patent: January 28, 2014Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: Matthew J. Anglin, Colin S. Dawson, Howard N. Martin, Michael G. Sisco

Patent number: 8612674Abstract: Virtual tape libraries (VTLs) and methods for concurrently accessing a VTL are provided. One VTL includes memory partitioned into multiple volumes, multiple virtual drives, and a processor. The processor is configured to enable multiple applications to concurrently access a virtual storage volume in a first or second access mode. One method includes receiving a first request for a first application to access a virtual storage volume to write data to or read data from the virtual storage volume and granting the first request. The method further includes receiving a second request for a second application to concurrently access the virtual storage volume to write data to or read data from the virtual storage volume, determining if the first and second requests are compatible, and accepting or denying the second request based on the determination. Also provided are physical computer storage mediums including computer code for performing the above method.Type: GrantFiled: December 1, 2010Date of Patent: December 17, 2013Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: Kai A.
