  • Patent number: 5369204
Abstract: Low molecular weight crosslinking agents useful in coatings based on esters of acrylamidoglycolate ethers are disclosed. The copolymeric crosslinking agents of the invention are prepared by copolymerizing a reactive acrylamidoglycolate monomer such as MAGME.RTM. methyl acrylamidoglycolate methyl ether with comonomers such as methyl methacrylate or butyl acrylate. The process of preparing the copolymeric crosslinkers of the invention makes use of chain transfer agents to limit the molecular weight of the crosslinking agents to 10,000 or less.

  • Patent number: 5314964
Abstract: A process for the preparation of novel grafted latexes having backbones formed from unsaturated monomers and having pendent isocyanate containing sidechains derived from isopropenyl-alpha, alpha- dimethylbenzyl isocyanate or copolymers thereof is described.Grafting latexes is carried out using a free radical redox initiator system in an aqueous medium. Latexes such as polybutadiene, polyvinyl chloride, and polyvinyl chloride-acrylic copolymers are converted to the corresponding isocyanate-functional latexes by the process of the invention. The isocyanate-functional grafted and cografted latexes described are useful in curable compositions.

  • Patent number: 5252689
Abstract: A novel, one component self-crosslinking resin and a process for its preparation are provided. The resin is the copolymer of:(I) N-hydroxysuccinimide-blocked meta-isopropenylalpha, alpha-dimethylbenzyl isocyanate;(II) a hydroxy group-containing ethylenically unsaturated monomer such as hydroxyethyl acrylate; and(III) optionally, an ethylenically unsaturated monomer free of hydroxy groups such as methylmethacrylate or butyl acrylate. The copolymers are useful as thermally stable fast curing one component resins for paint, and produce, upon heat curing, films and objects with good hardness and solvent resistance.

  • Patent number: 5233003
Abstract: An improved process for preparing a one component self-crosslinking resin is provided. The process for making the self-crosslinking resin is carried out by copolymerizing an oxime-blocked m-isopropenyl-alpha, alpha-dimethylbenzyl isocyanate (m-TMI), hydroxyethyl acrylate, and another unsaturated monomer at 75.degree. C. to 85.degree. C. in a polar organic solvent having a dipole moment of at least 3, such as acetonitrile. The polar solvent retards the thermal deblocking of the blocked TMI, thereby preventing the premature self-crosslinking and gelation of the copolymerization product prior to its use as a self-crosslinking resin.

  • Patent number: 3999509
Abstract: Method and apparatus for providing a completely encircling coating of an organic polymeric material on a localized region of a glass container. At a coating station, a glass container is rotated through at least 360 degrees. During the rotation, a material application head furnishes fluid organic polymeric material to the surface of the localized region of the glass container which is to be coated. Stop members hold the application head a fixed distance from the localized region and determine the perimeters of the encircling coating and a doctoring edge of the application head helps form a uniform layer or coating of the organic polymeric material completely encircling the localized region.

  • Patent number: 3947725
Abstract: Capacitive voltage transformers for measurement of voltage for metering and protective relay purposes on high voltage power transmission systems including a protective system therefor which consists of modifying the inductive value of the inductance in the circuit in response to a condition of the circuit which is abnormal to the normal operation thereof. The inductive value is varied, in one instance, by short circuiting the winding thereof, short circuiting occurring through the use of a triggering device operated in response to an over-voltage in the system. In another instance, the inductive value is varied by providing a further coil magnetically coupled to the inductance and which further coil is energized upon triggering of a device in circuit therewith upon abnormal operating conditions of the line in response to such abnormal condition.
