A first connection is established between an application on a mobile device and a local proxy on the mobile device, a second connection is established between the local proxy and a proxy server not located on the mobile device, and a third connection is established between the proxy server and a content server. A byte stream between client and server is communicated between the client and the server via the first, second, and third connections. The mobile device performs signaling optimization to optimize traffic over the second connection.

A first session is established between an application on a mobile device and a local proxy on the mobile device, a second session is established between the local proxy and a proxy server not located on the mobile device, and a third session is established between the proxy server and a content server. A byte stream present within the first and second sessions is monitored to identify patterns within the byte stream. If a pattern is found, the pattern is used to determine a behavior of the application. If that behavior is one that is a candidate for optimization, signaling optimization is performed between the application and the content server.
