  • Patent number: 5218098
Abstract: 5-(.alpha.-D-glucopyranosyloxymethyl)-furan-2-carboxaldehyde (GMF) is produced from isomaltulose by heating a solution of isomaltulose in a strongly polar aprotic solvent in the presence of an acidic ion-exchanger, either batchwise or by percolation of the solution through a column filled with the ion-exchanger. Novel derivatives of GMF of the formula (I) ##STR1## wherein R' is a hydrogen atom, an acyl group or an alkyl group and X represents --CH.sub.2 OH, --COOH, --C(H).dbd.NOH, --CN, --CH.sub.2 NHR" or --CH.dbd.CR"R'", where R" is a hydrogen atom, an acyl or aryl group or an alkyl group with up to 20 C atoms and R'" is a hydrogen atom, --NO.sub.2, --CN, --COOalkyl or acyl are described, and also their preparation and use for the preparation of surface-active compounds.

  • Patent number: 5023330
Abstract: Process of preparing 1,6-.beta.-D-anhydroglucopyranose (levoglucosan) in high purity is described, where the starting material with a water-content, adjusted to max. 20%, is pyrolyzed, the volatile components are condensed and this distillate is neutralized. After filtration and optional treatment with an adsorbent, the mixture is chromatographically separated over an ion-exchange resin with water as eluent. Levoglucosan containing fractions are concentrated and crystalline levoglucosan is obtained by an evaporation - and/or cooling crystallization from a supersaturated water solution.

  • Patent number: 4816078
Abstract: The invention concerns a process for production of L-arabionose in crystalline form. Starting material are extracted sugar beet pulp or other L-araban containing plant materials. These are heated in an autoclave as an aqueous suspension in the presence of Ca(OH).sub.2. The so obtained solution is chromatographed on a cationic exchanger in the Ca-form. The araban containing fraction is hydrolyzed after adding H.sub.2 SO.sub.4, neutralized and rechromatographed on a cationic exchanger in Ca-form. After concentrating the arabinose containing fractions L-arabinose is obtained in form of crystals by cooling crystallization.

  • Patent number: 4424078
Abstract: Lime-treated juice in a sugar plant is carbonated in a first stage and a second stage with a carbon dioxide-containing gas to remove lime and impurities therefrom. Exhaust gas from the second stage is recycled to the first stage. Heat can be recovered from exhaust gas from the first stage and from the second stage.

  • Patent number: 4290818
Abstract: A process is provided for utilizing the waste heat content of condensate and/or vapor produced in the manufacture of sugar in which thin juice is cooled, subjected to one or more stages of flash evaporation to concentrate and further cool the juice, after which it is heated with condensate and/or vapor produced elsewhere in the sugar manufacturing process and with incoming thin juice thereby heating the outgoing juice to substantially its original temperature and providing the cooling of the incoming thin juice. In another embodiment completely purified thin juice is concentrated in a multiple effect evaporating plant wherein the vapor produced in the final evaporator is compressed and is returned selectively to one of the preceding evaporators of the evaporating plant for use in heating the juice.

  • Patent number: 4273590
Abstract: Process for obtaining beet pulp of high dry-solids content from a sugar extraction process by mechanically pressing the pulp, mixing salts of polyvalent cations, an acid or both with the pressed pulp, further pressing the admixture and thermally drying the admixture. The salts of the polyvalent cations are preferably calcium chloride, aluminum chloride and ferric chloride and are added in an amount of from 0.5 to 10%, preferably from 1.5 to 4%, relative to the pulp dry-solids content. The liquid from the second pressing can be concentrated by evaporation and at least part can be recycled to produce the initial solution of the salts. The remainder of the concentrated liquid can be added to the pressed admixture before or after drying to further increase the dry-solids content.
