  • Patent number: 7490487
Abstract: In some embodiments, the invention provides a refining chamber for glass production, made of platinum group metal materials, with improved refining effectiveness. The refining chamber according has the shape of a tube with a cross section (1), with the cross section of the tube being shaped, in at least one segment, so that in the operating position the length (10) of a horizontal line (12) which divides the surface of the cross section into essentially a lower and an upper segment of the surface, both of which have essentially the same area, is greater than twice the maximum vertical extent (30) of the lower segment of the surface. The cross section of the refining chamber can, for example, have the shape of an oval, an ellipse, a slot, a rounded triangle or a polygon, and the stiffness of the shape of the refining chamber can be increased by forming radially peripheral creases, corners, waves or folds.

  • Patent number: 7007532
Abstract: A process for the production of tubular structural parts fabricated from PGM materials and having circumferential undulating bulges by forming from smooth-walled tube pieces. A smooth-walled tube piece (1) is inserted into a cylindrical forming die (2) with an internal diameter that corresponds substantially to the external diameter of the tube piece and that has radial undulating recesses (3). This die is provided at both axial ends with a press tool (4,5) that tightly seals the tube ends. The space that is thus formed is completely filled with an hydraulic fluid (6), and an hydraulic internal pressure is then produced by exerting an axial compression via the press tools (4,5) in such a way that under simultaneous shortening of the tube piece bulges (7) are formed in the wall of the latter that correspond to the recesses (3) of the forming die (2).

  • Publication number: 20020127932
Abstract: The present invention relates to three-dimensional catalyst gauzes for gas reactions knitted in two or more layers from noble metal wires in which the meshes of the individual layers are joined to one another by pile threads. In these catalyst gauzes weft threads are inserted between the mesh layers. These catalyst gauzes have an increased catalytic activity and efficiency in gas reaction. These improvements enable operation with a lower total amount of noble metal employed, for example by reducing the number of gauzes and/or the length of the wire processed in the catalyst gauze and/or the wire thickness, without thereby having to accept disadvantages with respect to the yield and selectivity of the gas reaction, mechanical strength and service life of the gauzes or unavoidable loss of noble metal.
