Patent number: 8882801Abstract: Methods and devices are provided for anchoring suture to bone. In one exemplary embodiment, a cannulated suture anchor is provided and it includes a suture-engaging member formed therein and configured to receive a suture therearound such that trailing ends of the suture can extend through the suture anchor. The suture anchor can also include at least a proximal portion having dual threads to facilitate engagement with bone. The present invention also provides exemplary sutures and drivers that can be used with the various methods and devices disclosed herein, or with other methods and devices known in the art.Type: GrantFiled: September 14, 2007Date of Patent: November 11, 2014Assignee: DePuy Mitek, LLCInventors: Kristian DiMatteo, Chris Kilburn-Peterson, Nathan S. Publication number: 20140257346Abstract: A device having one or more adjustable loops or coils associated with an implant body for use in soft tissue reconstructions is provided. One exemplary embodiment of a device includes a body and a suture filament, with the filament being used to form a self-locking sliding knot disposed on a top side of the body and a plurality of adjustable coils that are substantially disposed on the body's bottom side. Terminal ends of the filament located above the body's top side can be passed through an opening of a Lark's Head knot from opposite sides, thus forming a self-locking sliding knot, and then the terminal ends can be tensioned to adjust a circumference of the coils. Changing a coil's circumference changes a location of a ligament graft disposed on the coil. Other configurations of devices and systems, as well as methods for performing ACL repairs, are also provided.Type: ApplicationFiled: March 11, 2013Publication date: September 11, 2014Applicant: DePuy Mitek, LLCInventors: Mehmet Z. Sengun, Hugh S. West, Meghan A. Pasquali, David B. Spenciner, William Reiser, Jeff Parrish

Publication number: 20140074163Abstract: Improved bone anchors are disclosed for anchoring one or more sutures attached to soft tissue to a bone. The bone anchor has an anchor body that extends between a distal and a proximal end. A bore is formed axially in the anchor body and opens at the proximal end. One or more pins are fixed within the bore of the anchor body. One or more sutures can be looped on the pins for anchoring soft tissue to bone. The anchor body has a socket within the bore for receiving a driver tool. The distal end of the anchor body forms a non-threaded extension, which stabilizes the bone anchor, and helps prevent lateral movement during use. In one embodiment, the anchor body has coarse threads for engaging soft bone tissue and fine threads for engaging hard bone tissue.Type: ApplicationFiled: November 8, 2013Publication date: March 13, 2014Applicant: HS WEST INVESTMENTS, LLCInventor: Hugh S. Patent number: 8449553Abstract: A guide that facilitates the creation of two bone tunnels for use during a “double bundle” cruciate ligament repair. In the case of an anterior cruciate ligament repair the guide facilitates the formation of two tibial tunnels extending between a single aperture on the anterior tibia and two distinct apertures on the tibial plateau. The guide has a single angled throughbore for guiding a drill bit on a predetermined angle relative to the anterior portion of the tibial tunnel. In an alternative embodiment the guide has two independent and non-intersecting bores which allow the simultaneous placement into the tibial tunnel of two separate guide pins to guide the formation of two tibial tunnels on the tibial plateau.Type: GrantFiled: March 20, 2012Date of Patent: May 28, 2013Assignee: Linvatec CorporationInventors: Andrew Kam, Hugh S. Patent number: 8394088Abstract: Electrosurgical instruments are configured to selectively perform ablation or coagulation as desired. The electrosurgical instruments include at least two electrodes on the electrode probe that can be activated using an RF generator. The electrosurgical instruments are selectively switchable between an ablation mode and a coagulation mode by changing the amount of active electrode surface area. In particular, in the ablation mode, a relatively small electrode surface area is active. Thus, for a given power input, the current density is relatively high. In the coagulation mode, the active electrode surface area is increased, thereby reducing the current density in the coagulation mode for the given power input.Type: GrantFiled: January 4, 2010Date of Patent: March 12, 2013Assignee: HS West Investments, LLCInventor: Hugh S. West, Jr.

Publication number: 20120143250Abstract: Bone anchors useful in rotator cuff repair optimize the thread pattern for engaging different types of bone tissues, including harder cortical bone and softer cancellous bone. Bone anchors may include fine threads for engaging cortical bone and coarse threads for engaging cancellous bone. Threads can be made finer by increasing root diameter and surface angle of the threads. The pitches of the fine and coarse threads are kept the same, which allows fine threads to follow the impression created by coarse threads as the anchor is driven into a bone. Threads that engage cortical bone can be multi-fluted and include a first flute that follows the same thread pattern as coarse threads such that first flute follows the groove created by the coarse threads as the bone anchor is driven into a bone. Bone anchors can have a distal non-threaded stabilizing extension at the distal end.Type: ApplicationFiled: January 17, 2012Publication date: June 7, 2012Applicant: HS West Investments, LLCInventor: Hugh S. West, JR.

Publication number: 20120065677Abstract: Bone anchors are provided having three suture attachment sites disposed within a bore. The bone anchors are suitable for use in rotator cuff repair procedures. The bone anchors comprise an anchor body having a bore that opens at a proximal end of the anchor body. At least three attachment sites are positioned within the bore. Each attachment site is capable of slidably receiving a respective suture thereon. The three attachment sites are spaced apart and configured such that the portions of the respective sutures that are in contact with the three attachment sites are maintained separated during use. In one embodiment, the three suture attachment sites are provided by two transverse pins placed within the bore. In another embodiment, the bore opens at a distal end and a longitudinal pin is inserted into the opening at the distal end. The at least three attachment sites are provided by the longitudinal pin disposed within the bore.Type: ApplicationFiled: November 16, 2011Publication date: March 15, 2012Inventor: Hugh S. West, JR.

Publication number: 20120029523Abstract: A guide for a pin for proper placement for guiding a reamer to make a bone tunnel for femoral ACL/PCL reconstruction features a base ring with spaced struts to allow visual access to the native ligament stump. Alternatively the base ring can be supported by a see-through structure. The ring can be circular where it contacts the bone or elliptical depending on the relation of the plane in which the distal surface of the ring is disposed and the axis of the cannulated tool body. The dimensional differences between and inner and outer surface of the base ring allows visualization of two different dimensions for a proposed tunnel location.Type: ApplicationFiled: July 29, 2010Publication date: February 2, 2012Inventors: Andrew S. Kam, John X. Xerogeanes, Hugh S. West

Patent number: 7686810Abstract: Suture separation and organization devices for use in a tissue graft tensioning system. The inventive devices help to separate and organize a plurality of suture strands that extend away from a bone tunnel of a patient's leg during joint repair surgery (e.g., while repairing or replacing the anterior cruciate ligament (“ACL”)). The suture separation and organization device may comprise one or more elongate bodies, or a one-piece body, comprising a plurality of suture retention recesses or protrusions disposed on a perimeter of a body. The suture separation and organization device also includes recesses or passages adapted to receive corresponding posts of a graft tensioning device. In this way, the suture separation and organization device can be removably attached to the graft tensioning device.Type: GrantFiled: February 25, 2004Date of Patent: March 30, 2010Assignee: HS West Investments, LLCInventors: Hugh S.
