  • Patent number: 8721885
Abstract: Systems and methods for removing phosphorous (P) from P-containing wastewater are disclosed. The system includes a main filter unit (MFU) comprising P-adsorbing material. The MFU receives the P-containing wastewater and forms therefrom MFU-filtered wastewater having a first pH. A pH adjusting unit (AU) that contains pH-reducing material receives the MFU-filtered wastewater and forms therefrom AU-filtered wastewater having a second pH lower than the first pH. A replaceable filter unit (RFU) similar to the MFU but smaller may be arranged upstream of the MFU to pre-filter the P-containing wastewater. Some or all of the RFU may be replaced when maintaining the system.

  • Publication number: 20130032544
Abstract: Systems and methods for removing phosphorous (P) from P-containing wastewater from agricultural and urban outflow sources are disclosed. The system includes at least one water attenuation unit (WAU) fluidly coupled to at least one main filter unit (MFU) that contains P-adsorbing material. A high-flow diverter unit is arranged between the WAU and the MFU and diverts a portion of the flow of influent wastewater at high flow rates. The P-filter system is compact and has a modular construction. The effluent wastewater discharged from the P-filter system has 60% to 90% less phosphorous than the influent wastewater.

  • Publication number: 20080078720
Abstract: A modularized phosphorous filter (P-filter) for installing into open flow channels, such as urban and rural drainage ditches, streams, rivers, bayous, swales, etc. In some embodiments, the P-filter includes a module formed from a container that contains a phosphorous-filtering mass of loose pieces of slag. The container has anchoring extensions for anchoring the P-filter into the sides of the channel into which it is installed. In other embodiments, the P-filter is made of a number of P-filter modules each including a container that contains a phosphorous-filtering mass of loose pieces of slag. The P-filter modules are stacked with, and/or otherwise arranged relative to, one another so as to form a modularized P-filter. Preferably, the P-filter modules are sized to be readily movable by one or more people and/or power equipment, such as a tractor having a backhoe.
