Publication number: 20080257912Abstract: A plug and play system of fluid dispensing and auxiliary modules that use motors with integrated drivers, controllers and the capability of using an internal or external encoder where any one of several modules can be substituted into a base dispensing unit. In the case of positive displacement piston drives, a first motor can be used for the rotary valve operations and a second motor used to position the pump piston. The piston can be very accurately positioned by the second motor that can use an external linear coding system electrically coupled to the motor controller. The invention allows coordination between the two motors of a positive displacement piston system, as well as being able to work with several pump systems linked together in a liquid filling application or other application. The use of a motor system with a common user interface for different types of pump drives allows for “plug and play” capability for liquid filling and other applications.Type: ApplicationFiled: April 10, 2008Publication date: October 23, 2008Inventors: David T. Publication number: 20080079941Abstract: A method and apparatus are provided for determining the first and second order polarization mode dispersion (PMD) vectors of an optical device, such as a single mode optical fiber, using only a single input polarization state. This is achieved by passing light beams having a fixed polarization state and frequencies that vary over a range through the optical device that is being tested. The output polarization states of the light beams that have passed through the optical device are measured, and used to form a curve in Stokes space on a Poincare sphere. The shape of this curve is used to approximate the first and second order (and possibly higher order) PMD vectors, using formulas based on differential geometry.Type: ApplicationFiled: September 7, 2005Publication date: April 3, 2008Applicant: AGENCY FOR SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY AND RESEARCHInventors: Hui Dong, Yandong Gong, Chao Lu
