In the present invention, nanoparticles having embedded calcium carbonate crystals can be formed using a biocompatible polymer and an adipocyte-targeting ligand (a fatty acid) to minimize delivery to surrounding cells and tissues other than adipocytes and maximize the embedding of the nanoparticles into adipocytes.
