    Abstract: A method for determining a position of a magnetic field sensor in a plane defined by a first direction and a second direction perpendicular to the first direction includes an act of measuring, by the magnetic field sensor, a 3D magnetic field vector of a magnetic field generated by a magnet separated from the plane by an airgap, wherein the 3D magnetic field vector includes first, second, and third magnetic field components in respective first, second, and third directions. The method further includes determining a first displacement between the magnetic field sensor and the magnet in a first direction based on the first magnetic field component and the third magnetic field component. The method further includes determining a second displacement between the magnetic field sensor and the magnet in a second direction based on the second magnetic field component and the third magnetic field component.
