  • Patent number: 7429254
Abstract: An ankle foot brace having a heel stirrup, a lower lateral and medial uprights, and an upper lateral and medial uprights hinged to the respective lower uprights. A malleolar window, preferably with a membrane extending thereupon, creates a hammock like support for the malleolus. The hinge point on the side having the malleolar window is moved upwards and preferably back from the apex of the malleolus. Doing so allows the application of tolerable corrective forces at this location to help prevent undesired movement of the malleolus. If a membrane is not employed, the window allows application of corrective forces in the vicinity of the malleolus without causing pain thereto.

  • Publication number: 20070265557
Abstract: An orthosis having at least one adjustable joint for articulating two hinged parts of the orthosis, the joint comprises a tensor for carrying the load applied between the two hinged parts. Compression surfaces coupled to the hinged parts are constructed to apply compression forces to a compression element when the angle between the two parts widens. Preferably the compression element comprises a block of resilient material. The joint allows adjustability of the unloaded angle between the hinged parts by varying the dimensions of the block, while selecting blocks having different compressional characteristics such as modulus of elasticity allows varying the degree of resistance to widening the angle between the two hinged parts. The joint is particularly advantageous in constructing an articulating leg brace.

  • Publication number: 20060033233
Abstract: A method for making a model or a partial model of a leg is based on taking measurements of the plantar area of the foot utilizing a crushable impression block such as a crush box to create a three dimensional impression, and using the impression to cast a leg model from which a brace may be made.

  • Publication number: 20050103812
Abstract: A shoe donning device is provided comprising a generally U shaped body 20, having an external portion 22 and an internal portion 24 extending downwardly from a top portion 26. The external portion having a top region, and spaced from said internal region for preventing said body from migrating forwardly from the rear of the shoe. The internal portion has an internal top region, and an internal bottom region which has at least one upwardly extending slot 50 cut in its rear region. Two side extensions extend forwardly from the rear portion and have grip enhancers to provide positive engagement between the shoe and the device. Each of the side extensions has a finger grips coupled to its upper side. The rear portion of the internal region is forwardly biased. The device is made of resilient, smooth, semi rigid material, such as molded plastic.

  • Patent number: 5725486
Abstract: An orthotic leg elevator for elevating the leg of a subject during a post-operative period or in other situations in which it is necessary to avoid direct contact between the leg and a bed or other surface, or to raise the leg with respect to a surface. The leg elevator includes a rectangular block whose top side has formed therein a concave trough extending the length of the block to cradle the leg of the subject so that his foot is then adjacent the front end of the trough. Nested in the trough at its rear end is a knee-supporting piece which underlies and conforms to the knee joint. Secured to the block are three detachable straps adapted to engage the cradled leg at spaced positions. The first strap engages the leg above the ankle; the second at an intermediate position between the ankle and the knee, and the third just above the knee, thereby immobilizing the leg.
