Publication number: 20130214457Abstract: A method of electrospinning fibres is disclosed. The fibres have an inner core surrounded by a porous outer shell. The method comprises co-electrospinning first and second liquids as core and shell respectively, the second liquid surrounding the first liquid in a jet issuing from a Taylor cone, wherein the first and second liquids are miscible or semi-miscible with each other, such that pore generation is driven in the shell of the fibre. The liquids may be solutions or melts. The electrical conductivity, viscosity, miscibility and other parameters of the liquids determine the structure of the produced fibres. As well as producing fibres having a porous shell there are described methods of co-electrospraying porous beads as well as core-shell vesicles having a porous shell. The methods may be used to produce hydrogen storage fibres, vesicles and beads. The methods may also be used for producing controlled drug-delivery fibres, vesicles and beads.Type: ApplicationFiled: August 8, 2011Publication date: August 22, 2013Applicant: THE SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY FACILITIES COUNCILInventors: William Ian Fraser David, Martin Owen-Jones, Derek William Kenneth Jenkins, Stephen Bennington, Arthur Lovell, Zeynep Kurban

Publication number: 20110136236Abstract: The invention relates to a method of producing genetically modified eukaryotic cells with optimised growth characteristics wherein a recombinant first nucleotide sequence has been integrated into a desired position in the genome. The sequence contains at least one gene encoding a plasma membrane protein with either toxin-receptor or toxic properties and allowing for surface expression based cell sorting to identify a suitable genomic integration locus. The invention also relates to a second exogenous nucleotide sequence containing at least one protein of interest as well as a vector, which aids in the site specific exchange of the first with the second nucleotide sequence. Efficient exchange is achieved by a stringent selection strategy that will kill all cells still expressing the plasma membrane protein.Type: ApplicationFiled: April 21, 2009Publication date: June 9, 2011Applicant: UniTargeting Research ASInventors: Nicole Borth, Ian Fraser Pryme, Beate Stern

Patent number: 6385658Abstract: Techniques used in communicating messages between processes are described using a shared message buffer pool and incoming message lists associated with each process. Associated with each process is message management information. Using the message management information, incoming messages to a process are retrieved, outgoing messages to another process are sent, and message buffers are allocated as needed from a free message buffer list. The free message buffer list is a shared resource from which processes obtain a free message buffer to send a message to another process. Access to the shared free message buffer list and process message lists is synchronized through discipline imposed upon updating and accessing various fields of the data structure without requiring a global locking mechanism for synchronization of shared resources.Type: GrantFiled: June 27, 1997Date of Patent: May 7, 2002Assignee: Compaq Information Technologies Group, L.P.Inventors: Paul Karl Harter, Jr., James Ian Fraser, Jr.

Patent number: 6192469Abstract: A method and apparatus for providing relocatable code storage in a multifunction controller or other integrated circuit which includes an embedded microprocessor and an internal memory. The relocatable code is initially stored in an external memory which is shared by the embedded microprocessor and other system processing elements such as a host CPU. During a system initialization, power-on reset or other predetermined event, a memory multiplexing circuit connects the address inputs of the internal memory to a read/write address bus, and connects the output of a jump data storage circuit to a code data output bus. The jump data storage circuit uses code addresses received from the embedded microprocessor to generate a jump instruction code which is supplied to the embedded microprocessor via the code data output bus.Type: GrantFiled: September 17, 1996Date of Patent: February 20, 2001Assignee: Standard Microsystems CorporationInventors: Kenneth George Smalley, Ian Fraser Harris
