  • Patent number: 5074388
Abstract: A brake actuator has a housing (4) containing a pair of brake-applying members (9, 10) interengaged by way of a threaded connection (11) to form a strut of which the length is variable by rotation of one of the members. One (9) of the members has a gear formation (16) thereon meshing with a corresponding formation (22) on a drive gear (21). The formation (22) has an extended profile permitting simultaneous rotational and translational movements of the member (9) relative to the drive gear (21) so that rotation of the drive gear causes expansion and contraction of the strut for brake actuation. The brake actuator housing (4) is mounted at a location adjacent the wheel while a power unit (10) is carried by a suspension member (1) in order to decrease noise and vibration transmition.

  • Patent number: 4995480
Abstract: A vehicle brake has a fixed backplate carrying a pair of friction elements and an actuator operable to urge the elements into braking engagement with a rotary braking surface. An abutment for the elements has a portion which is deflectable by load on the elements arising from braking torque. A radiation input device directs radiation at a surface of the deflectable portion and a device is provided to sense radiation after its impingement on the portion and to transmit the sensed radiation to a device producing a responsive electrical output representing deflections of the portion.

  • Patent number: 4587986
Abstract: A motor vehicle fuel system operable selectively to supply metered quantities of petrol or LPG in its gaseous state to a carburetter induction passage. The LPG system includes a single stage pressure regulator and an injection valve which may be a digital or an analogue valve. The regulator operates to vary the pressure of gaseous LPG with variations in engine loading by referring that pressure across a single diaphragm to the pressure established in the induction passage downstream of the throttle valve by operation of the engine, while maintaining that regulated gas pressure above that subsisting in the induction passage upstream of the throttle valve.
