In more detail the invention relates to a process for the production of formaldehyde from methanol includes the passage, at an elevated temperature, of a gas stream containing methanol and oxygen through a catalyst, the catalyst comprising a monolithic support provided with channels for passage therethrough of the gas stream and with the channel wall surfaces coated or impregnated with one or more elements selected from the group consisting of copper, silver, gold and iron.
