Patent number: 10179702Abstract: A feeder for bulk solids has a rotatable bin with an open bottom and an open top and is tilted so that one side of the bin is substantially vertical. A rotating auger is located within the bin having a vertically oriented exposed helical fin. Longitudinal ribs are secured on an inner surface of the bin and spaced radially. Material is loaded into the open top of the rotating bin, tumbling the material toward the bottom of the bin causing the material to constantly contact the rotating auger. The auger then feeds the material through the open bottom of the bin. Ribs engage the material in the bin enhancing tumbling and feeding.Type: GrantFiled: May 19, 2017Date of Patent: January 15, 2019Assignee: BATTELLE ENERGY ALLIANCE, LLCInventor: Corrie Ian Nichol

Patent number: 9574343Abstract: The present invention relates to a method for protecting the lower regions of and structure of a building (10) from damage or degradation by termites. The method comprises the steps of creating a region in the ground below the building having properties hostile to termites whereby to discourage them from approaching the vicinity of the building. In one embodiment means for creating a hostile region in the ground below the building are provided by a pump (12) which creates a superatmoshpheric pressure field (40) in this region. Treatment agents (31) such as ozone may be delivered to the ground region in order to provide a hostile effect to the termites by affecting their pheromone chemistry and/or their reproductive or communicative behavior. A secondary function of the present invention relates to the creation of a forced ventilation (46) of the habitable region (18) within which the apparatus of the present invention resides.Type: GrantFiled: April 25, 2013Date of Patent: February 21, 2017Assignee: Prestige Air-Technology LimitedInventor: Paul Ian Nichols

Patent number: 8620478Abstract: There is provided an apparatus (1) and method for protecting a building (3) from pests or other nuisances in the vicinity of buildings. The apparatus (1) comprises a monitor (7) having the ability to acquire environmental condition information relating to environmental conditions in a vicinity of the building (3), and a treatment controller (9) which is capable of using the environmental condition information received from the monitor (7) to provide an amount of treatment agent which, for those environmental conditions, remains below a safety threshold for habitation of the building (3) and reduces a population of the pests. The present invention circumvents the need to evacuate inhabitants of the buildings before any treatment agent is administered to the ground lying therebeneath. Further, near-continuous protection and treatment of buildings is also possible.Type: GrantFiled: November 25, 2008Date of Patent: December 31, 2013Assignee: Prestige Air-Technology LimitedInventor: Paul Ian Nichols

Publication number: 20080307694Abstract: The present invention relates to apparatus for protecting the lower regions of and structure of a building (10) from damage or degradation by a target subterranean degradation factor (42) such as a termite or fungus, for example. The apparatus comprising means (12) for creating a region in the ground below the building having properties hostile to the target subterranean degradation factor whereby to discourage the degradation factor from approaching, or growing within the vicinity of, the building. In one embodiment the means for creating a hostile region in the ground below the building are provided by a pump (12) which creates a superatmospheric pressure field (40) in this region.Type: ApplicationFiled: November 17, 2006Publication date: December 18, 2008Applicant: PRESTIGE AIR-TECHNOLOGY LIMITEDInventor: Paul Ian Nichols

Publication number: 20050027102Abstract: Molecularly imprinted polymers can be utilized in stereo- and regio-selective synthesis. These systems can be utilized, e.g. for peptide synthesis, by selectively coordinating reactants at a predetermined preformed cavity. Further, such polymers may be used for the selective removal of one enantiomeric species from solution, allowing reaction to be directed to another species in bulk solution leading to stereoselective and/or regio-selective synthesis in the cavity of for instance peptides. Additionally, when utilized as regioselectively interacting protectioning matrices, these polymers can direct reaction to an alternate centre of a reacting substrate.Type: ApplicationFiled: August 24, 2004Publication date: February 3, 2005Inventors: Klaus Mosbach, Ian Nicholls, Olof Ramstrom

Patent number: 5656052Abstract: A furnace is provided for the heating of glass sheets to be bent, whereby precise control of the temperature profile across a sheet may be achieved, resulting in improved control over the shape to which the sheet is bent. The furnace has at least one differential heating zone provided with a plurality of main heating elements, and at least one shield for directing heat radiated by said heating elements whereby a controlled differential heating of the glass sheet may be achieved. Transport means, e.g. wheeled boxes, are provided to advance the sheet through the furnace and bending means, e.g. gravity bending ring moulds, may bend the sheet either during, or subsequent to, the heating step.Type: GrantFiled: December 20, 1994Date of Patent: August 12, 1997Assignee: Pilkington Glass LimitedInventors: James Boardman, Ian Nichols Tetlow

Patent number: 5526457Abstract: An overhead electrical power and optical transmission system, comprising overhead electrical phase conductors (2) extending between and supported by towers (10), and at least one optical cable (1) that extends between and is supported by, the towers. Each optical cable has a resistive element (12) that is removably supported thereby and which extends from a tower (10) where it is earthed part of the way along the span of the optical cable, and the resistive element has the necessary length and conductivity such that if a dry band (6) occurs on the cable at the end of the element, the potential difference (VG') across the band is insufficient to form an arc, such that any induced current is insufficient to sustain any arc that may occur across the dry band.Type: GrantFiled: December 6, 1994Date of Patent: June 11, 1996Assignee: BICC Public Limited CompanyInventors: Simon M. Rowland, Ian Nichols
