    Abstract: A simulated mechanical respiratory trigger and test lung have been developed. The trigger in one embodiment is capable of triggering a variety of mechanical ventilators to deliver predetermined respiratory rates that simulate a spontaneously breathing patient. This permits the student/health care provider to respond to this spontaneous effort and optimize mechanical ventilator settings. The test lung in an embodiment is capable of varying the simulated patient pulmonary compliance in increments not previously available.
