Patent number: 7160238Abstract: Apparatus and method are described for delivery of a treating element, such as a radiation source, through a catheter to a desired site in the vascular system of a patient, such as a coronary artery, for inhibiting the formation of scar tissue such as may occur in restenosis following balloon angioplasty. The apparatus includes an elongated flexible catheter tube having proximal and distal end portions, with a lumen extending therebetween, and a diameter sufficiently small for insertion in to a patient's vascular system. One or more treating elements, such as a capsule or pellet containing radioactive material, is positionable within the lumen and movable between the proximal and distal end portions under the force of liquid flowing through the lumen. A method for using such apparatus, including a method for using such apparatus simultaneously with a balloon angioplasty procedure, is disclosed.Type: GrantFiled: December 21, 1999Date of Patent: January 9, 2007Assignee: Best Vascular, Inc.Inventors: Ron Waksman, Thomas D. Weldon, Richard A. Hillstead, Jonathan J. Rosen, Charles E. Larsen, Ian R. Crocker, Raphael F. Meloul

Patent number: 6273858Abstract: A system and method for the prevention of restenosis uses a source of radiation to treat the blood vessel. An intra-vascular ultrasound system acquires precise two-dimensional images of a treatment volume. The intra-vascular ultrasound system enables medical personnel to obtain precise measurements of the distance between the radiation source and the lesion. Whereas conventional techniques for measuring this distance relied upon external imaging devices, the intra-vascular ultrasound system obtains in-vivo images allowing precise measurements to be taken at the point at which the radiation will be delivered. A computer-based treatment planner acquires the images from the imaging system and reconstructs a three-dimensional image of the treatment volume. From a dose prescription, the treatment planner calculates and optimizes the dose and also registers the dose with images of the treatment volume. A voice recognition unit allows medical personnel to provide voice commands for operating the system.Type: GrantFiled: June 26, 2000Date of Patent: August 14, 2001Assignee: Emory UniversityInventors: Timothy H. Fox, Ian R. Crocker
