  • Patent number: 5536531
Abstract: A pneumatic applicator for shear thinning viscous coating materials that includes a nozzle, an air operated system for dispensing viscous material at a steady rate through the nozzle, and an air directing housing defining an air chamber around the nozzle. The air directing housing defines an air outlet opening for the air chamber around the nozzle. Distal surfaces of the housing and nozzle are close to co-planar and the air outlet opening has an area in the range of about 5 to 15 square millimeters. An adjustable system directs air under pressure into the air chamber so that when the viscous material is dispensed through the nozzle at a generally uniform rate, air can be directed into the chamber and out through the air outlet opening around the nozzle and only the amount of air being directed into the chamber need be adjusted to cause viscous material being dispensed from the nozzle to be applied to a surface adjacent the nozzle in coatings of various widths and thicknesses.

  • Patent number: 5476889
Abstract: A sealer or adhesive composition based on a polyoxyalkylene polymer having a silicon-containing hydrolyzable group, which has improved adhesion in a dried, cured state with a paint coating containing acrylic resins, acrylic-urethane resins, or urethane resins. The improvement involves the addition to such a sealer/adhesive composition of an alkylarylsulfonamide contained therein in an amount of least about 50 phr or more, by weight. The invention also pertains to a method applying and adhering a paint coating to such a sealer composition after it is dried.

  • Patent number: 5464888
Abstract: A sealer or adhesive composition based on a polyoxyalkylene polymer having a silicon-containing hydrolyzable group, which has improved compatibility with a base or first paint coat containing acrylic resins. The improvement involves the addition to such a sealer/adhesive composition of a polar organic solvent material having both a Snyder's polarity value in the range of from 6.2 to 7.3 and belonging to Snyder's selectivity group III. In a method of the present invention, the inventive sealer/adhesive composition is wet-on-wet overcoated by a base coat of a multi-coat paint system, where the base coat contains acrylic resin, pigment and auxiliary polar solvents, while retarding and even completely preventing adverse surface defects in the base coat upon its drying (curing), such as cracking or wrinkling therein, to provide an improved coated substrate.
