  • Patent number: 4913632
Abstract: A rotary distributor fuel injection pump includes a rotary distributor member movable axially in a body part. The distributor member has a transverse bore in which is mounted a pumping plunger. At its outer end the plunger is engaged by a cam follower including a roller which is axially movable with the distributor member and which engages cam lobes formed on the internal surface of a cam ring to effect inward movement to the plunger. Outward movement of the plunger is effected by supplying fuel to the bore and the extent of outward movement of the plunger is limited by stop rings on the opposite sides of the cam ring. The stop rings are mounted in the body and define internal inclined surfaces which are engaged by end portions of the roller so that as the distributor member is moved axially the extent of outward movement of the plunger will be varied to control the amount of fuel supplied by the pump.

  • Patent number: 4807583
Abstract: A fuel pumping apparatus for supplying fuel to a compression ignition engine includes a high pressure pump to which fuel is supplied by a low pressure pump by way of a throttle which is responsive to the output pressure of the low pressure pump for the purpose of providing a governing action. A valve is connected in series with the pumps and is energized to the open position through a pressure responsive switch which closes when the output pressure of the low pressure pump is above a predetermined value. Means is provided to energize the valve for the purpose of starting the associated engine.

  • Patent number: 4802453
Abstract: A fuel injection pump of the rotary distributor type has a fluid pressure operable piston connected to a cam ring of the pump for the purpose of timing adjustment. Flow of fluid into or out of one end of the cylinder containing the piston is controlled by a valve member slidable in a bore in the piston. The valve member is pressure balanced and is positioned by means of control pistons in response to variation in fluid pressure. The piston is subject to reaction forces when the cam followeres of the pump engage the leading faces of the cam lobes and the tendency for piston movement is resisted by a ball valve. Opposite reaction forces occur when the cam followers move over the crests of the cam lobes and piston movement is resisted by restricting liquid flow from the other end of the cylinder.

  • Patent number: 4798189
Abstract: A fuel injection pump includes a piston movable by fluid pressure to vary the setting of a cam ring of the apparatus in order to alter the timing of fuel delivery. A piston member is provided for the purpose of setting the piston in a particular position when the associated engine is cold and acceleration is required. The piston member is angularly movable and port means is provided in the piston member and its cylinder so that in one angular position the opposite ends of the piston member are subject to the same fluid pressure and in other angular positions one end of the cylinder contains fluid at a higher pressure to cause the piston member to move from the one end of the cylinder to set the piston in the desired position.

  • Patent number: 4764092
Abstract: A liquid fuel injection pump of the rotary distributor type has a first groove on the distributor member for registration with fuel supply ports and a second groove for registration with outlet ports. The grooves are connected to the plunger bore and as the distributor member rotates fuel is supplied to the bore through the first groove and delivered to an outlet through the second groove. The distributor member is axially movable to control the quantity of fuel delivered and in the excess fuel position the second groove is arranged to register with a vent port during the initial period of registration of the first groove with an inlet port. This allows air to be purged from the passage and bore.

  • Patent number: 4759694
Abstract: A liquid fuel pumping apparatus of the rotary distributor type has a rotary distributor which is also axially movable to determine the quantity of fuel supplied by the apparatus. Inclined stop surfaces are provided to limit the outward movement of the pumping plungers during the filling strokes and an axial reaction is applied to the distributor member when the surfaces engage. The axial position of the distributor member is controlled by applying fluid pressure to one end thereof, the fluid being supplied to a chamber. A supply pasage to the chamber includes a check valve and escape of fluid from the chamber is controlled by a sleeve which covers a port. When the axial reaction is applied the port is closed by the sleeve and the check valve closes to form a hydraulic lock.
