  • Patent number: 5443809
Abstract: Disclosed is a continuous process for the synthesis of electrode-quality metal oxide particles by the thermal decomposition of ammonium metal oxides in a fluidized bed under oxidation/reduction conditions which are controlled by the temperature and ammonium content of the process gas.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: May 24, 1994
Date of Patent: August 22, 1995
    Assignee: Valence Technology, Inc.
    Inventor: Ib I. Olsen
  • Patent number: 5424151
Abstract: In accordance with the invention, a new cathode composition is prepared in a preferred method, in situ, in a cell whereby such in situ formation results in enhanced contact between the cathode composition and the current collector and between the electrolyte layer and the cathode composition. The new cathode composition of the invention comprises first and second polymeric materials, the first being radiation cured and ionically conductive and the second being electrochemically cured and electrically conductive. Preferably, the first is radiation cured before the second is electrochemically cured. The second polymeric material is cured in an electrochemical cell which comprises an alkali metal-containing anode layer. The cell desirably contains an electrolyte which consists of a solid ionically conductive polymeric material.

  • Patent number: 5384213
Abstract: Disclosed is a process for making a solid electrolyte for use in solid state electrochemical device which process includes the use of a solvent comprising a low boiling point component having a boiling point not greater than about 100.degree. C. Specifically, the disclosed process comprises:(i) solvating a solid matrix-forming monomer or a partial polymer thereof in a solvent comprising at least one low boiling point solvent component having a boiling point not greater than 100.degree. C. and which is capable of solvating an electrolytic salt;(ii) coating the solvated monomer or partial polymer onto an electrode to form a layer of electrolyte precursor;(iii) covering said electrolyte precursor with a protective sheet layer which is substantially impervious to said solvent but which allows passage of radiation which cures the uncured electrolyte; and(iv) curing the electrolyte precursor by radiation through the sheet layer.

  • Patent number: 5340368
Abstract: In accordance with a preferred method, a new cathode composition is prepared in situ, in a cell, whereby such in situ formation method results in enhanced contact between the cathode composition and the current collector and between the electrolyte layer and the cathode composition. The new method provides such in situ prepared cathode composition comprising first and second polymeric materials, the first being radiation cured and ionically conductive and the second being electrochemically cured and electrically conductive. In accordance with the preferred method, the first is radiation cured before the second is electrochemically cured and the second polymeric material is cured in an electrochemical cell which comprises a preferred alkali metal-containing anode layer.
