Patent number: 5064275Abstract: A liquid crystal display device comprises a plurality of lateral electrodes and a plurality of longitudinal electrodes carried on a pair of substrates. A scanning signal addressing one of the lateral electrodes is supplied to a scanning signal bus which is connected to each of the lateral electrode via an optically activated switch and a video signal to be supplied to one of the longitudinal electrodes is supplied to a display signal bus which is connected to each of the longitudinal signal bus. The optically activated switches are selectively activated by irradiation of an optical beam and the scanning signal and the video signal are supplied to the addressed electrodes.Type: GrantFiled: March 18, 1991Date of Patent: November 12, 1991Assignees: Victor Company of Japan, Ltd., Tokai CompanyInventors: Ichiro Tsunoda, Toshiyasu Eguchi

Patent number: 4035060Abstract: An electro-optic device comprises a plurality of first electrodes provided on a top substrate and a second electrode provided on a bottom substrate, the first electrodes confronting the second electrode through electro-optical matter which will show electro-optical phenomena by the application of electric field, the first and second electrodes being connected through external impedance elements such as resistors or capacitors to a variable voltage source. In this electro-optic device, the electric field applied between the first and second electrodes are partially changed by various means, for instance, by making the areas of the first electrodes different, or by varying the values of the external impedance elements such as resistors or capacitors, as a result of which the electro-optical matter shows various electro-optical phenomena.Type: GrantFiled: November 13, 1975Date of Patent: July 12, 1977Assignee: Dainippon Printing Co., LtdInventors: Ichiro Tsunoda, Satoshi Takeuchi, Yoichiro Hirao, Takeo Suzuki, Yoshihiro Nishiue, Katsumasa Tadokoro, Toshimasa Fukagawa, Isamu Harada, Akira Misawa, Kazuo Watanabe

Patent number: 3994567Abstract: An electro-optical cell comprises, on an optical path, a pair of electrode base plates and a nematic liquid crystal material having a positive dielectric anisotropy and sandwiched between the electrode base plates, each of which comprises a transparent base plate having an inner surface, an electrode film provided on the inner surface, and a polyimide resin film orientated in one direction and provided on the inner surface over the electrode film, the electrode base plates being mutually disposed on opposite sides of the liquid crystal material with their respective polyimide resin films on their inner sides in mutually facing state with the orientated direction of one polyimide resin film intersecting that of the other as viewed along the optical path. An advantageous feature of this electro-optical cell is that the electrode base plates thereof has durable and heat-resistant orientation which can impart a uniform, initial alignment of ample strength to the liquid crystal.Type: GrantFiled: November 28, 1975Date of Patent: November 30, 1976Assignee: Dai Nippon Insatsu Kabushiki KaishaInventors: Makoto Matsuo, Takashi Toida, Ichiro Tsunoda

Patent number: 3977767Abstract: An electro-optical cell comprises, on an optical path: front and back electrode base plates each comprising a transparent base plate having an inner surface, an electrode film provided on said inner surface, and an optically active poly-.alpha.-amino acid film provided on said inner surface over the electrode film and orientated in one direction intersecting the orientated direction of the poly-.alpha.-amino acid film of the other electrode base plate, the electrode base plates being disposed with the inner surfaces of their base plates in mutually facing state; and a nematic liquid crystal substance having a positive dielectric anisotropy and interposed between the front and back electrode base plates. Electro-optical devices can be fabricated by combining this electro-optical cell with front and back polarizers with polarization directions at specific angles relative to the orientation processed directions of the electrode base plates and by further adding a reflecting plate.Type: GrantFiled: July 21, 1975Date of Patent: August 31, 1976Assignee: Dai Nippon Insatsu Kabushiki KaishaInventors: Yoshihisa Okuma, Takashi Toida, Ichiro Tsunoda
