    Abstract: An optical directional coupler of the invention has a first surface which is formed at the one end of a first or second graded index type light transmission body and which is perpendicular to the optical axis of the light transmission body, and also has a plurality of second surfaces which are formed at parts of the one end of the light transmission body which are different from the first surface. The light which is transmitted from a first optical fiber through the first surface is further transmitted through the second light transmission body, and then becomes incident on a second optical fiber. The light which is transmitted from the first optical fiber through the second surfaces is further transmitted through the second light transmission body and then becomes incident on a plurality of third optical fibers.
