A method of manufacturing such a transducer is also disclosed. The piezoelectric body may have a substantially uniform direction of polarization, or alternating zones of opposite polarization. The elements can be hard wired or connected through a switching circuit to display either circumferential or axial or other ultrasonic focal patterns, and may be connected in a parallel, rather than a series configuration.
