  • Publication number: 20110082543
Abstract: Several methods for preventing, minimizing, or delaying the incidence of posterior capsule opacification are provided. A first method involves chemically activating the surface of an implantable ocular device, such as an intraocular lens or a capsular tension ring, by grafting a chemical moiety onto the surface of the device, covalently attaching a non-cytotoxic inhibitor compound to the chemical moiety to produce an inhibitor implantable ocular device, and implanting this inhibitor implantable ocular device into the capsular bag of an eye of a patient during extracapsular cataract surgery. Appropriate inhibitor compounds include RGD mimetics, RGD peptides, and flavonoids. A second method involves surface modifying the exterior surface of a capsular tension ring by covalently attaching a mitotic inhibitor, preferably a conjugate of methotrexate and a bovine serum albumin, and implanting this inhibitor tension ring into the capsular bag of an eye of a patient during extracapsular cataract surgery.

  • Patent number: 5328657
Abstract: The present method relates to molding metal particles by forming a flowable mixture. The metal particles are mixed with a polyorganic acid which chemically reacts with the metal particles. The flowable mixture is transferred to a mold before the chemical reaction between the metal particles and the polyorganic acid proceeds so far as to substantially increase the viscosity of the flowable mixture. A green preform is created by applying pressure to the mixture in a mold. The green preform is heated to a first temperature to vaporize substantially all of the non-organic components of the reacted polyorganic acid from the preform. The preform is then heated to a second temperature greater than the first temperature to sinter the metal particles.

  • Patent number: 4960818
Abstract: A process is disclosed for producing a semicrystalline polymer composite form which exhibits high strength and low electrical resistivity. Polyether-etherketone PEEK) powder and 4 to 10 volume percent a hard metal powder are blended and then compacted at room temperature to a relative green density greater than 60%. The resulting preform has an electrically conductive segregated network of metal particles throughout a PEEK matrix.
