Publication number: 20230212831Abstract: A passive damper for damping relative lateral movement between a tensioned cable or other oblong member and a support structure includes a first fixture element rigidly connected to the cable or other oblong member, a second fixture element rigidly connected to the support structure, and at least one rotational damping device arranged between the first and second fixture elements . The rotational damping device is configured to translate the relative lateral movement into relative rotational moment between at least two arms of the rotational damping device that are connected at a rotational joint with a damping pad clamped in between the at least two arms The rotational joint has a rotational axis (Y) substantially parallel with a longitudinal axis (X) of the cable.Type: ApplicationFiled: May 26, 2021Publication date: July 6, 2023Applicant: Damptech A/SInventor: Imad H. Patent number: 9260860Abstract: A passive damper with a first set of parallel disposed plates and a second set of parallel disposed plates, that overlap one another in an alternating fashion at a rotational joint with damping pads between the plates. The rotational joint comprises a pin or bolt inserted through apertures in the plates and there is a connection hole in each of the plates of the second set of plates for receiving a connection pin (6) therein for connecting the second set of plates to a members of a structure. The connection holes in a selection of the plates of the second set of plates is shaped and dimensioned to provide a predetermined amount of clearance with said connection pin so that the connection pin can move inside the connection holes of the selection of plates taking part in the damping action of the damper.Type: GrantFiled: July 12, 2012Date of Patent: February 16, 2016Assignee: Damptech A/SInventor: Imad H Mualla

Publication number: 20140174002Abstract: A passive damper (1) with a first set (7) of parallel disposed plates (7a) and a second set (8) of parallel disposed plates (8b,8c,8d), that overlap one another in an alternating fashion at a rotational joint with damping pads (15) between the plates (7a,8b,8c,8d). The rotational joint comprises a pin or bolt (9) inserted through apertures (15) in the plates (7a,8b,8c,8d) and there is a connection hole (14b) in each of the plates of the second set (8) of plates for receiving a connection pin (6) therein for connecting the second set of plates (8) to a members (2,3) of a structure. The connection holes (14c,14d) in a selection of the plates (8c,8d) of the second set (8) of plates is shaped and dimensioned to provide a predetermined amount of clearance with said connection pin (6) so that the connection pin (6) can move inside the connection holes (14c,14d) of the selection of plates (8c,8d) to a predetermined extent without the selection of plates (8c,8d) taking part in the damping action of the damper (1).Type: ApplicationFiled: July 12, 2012Publication date: June 26, 2014Inventor: Imad H. Patent number: 8621791Abstract: A damper has two sets of first elongate members, second elongate members that are connected so that they can rotate and that connect the first elongate members to one another, and damping members which attenuate the relative movement between the first elongate members and the second elongate members. The respective first joints of each of the first members are connected to the first connection members and the second connection members so that they can rotate. The first joint of the first elongate member, the first joints of the other first elongate members, and each of the second joints are located along the common axes.Type: GrantFiled: October 2, 2010Date of Patent: January 7, 2014Assignee: Damptech A/SInventor: Imad H. Patent number: 8307585Abstract: The invention is a damper and a method for protecting buildings and similar structural systems from dynamic loading such as loading caused by earthquakes, strong winds or machine vibrations. More specifically, the damper is made from structural members being interconnected in frictional or visco-elastically dampened rotational joints. Due to the dampening of the joints, relative movement between the structural elements is dampened. In particular, the damper is useful for base isolation, e.g., in order to allow a building or a machine to move in a dampened movement relative to its foundation or in order to allow a cable stay of a cable stay bridge to move in a dampened movement relative to its fixation point on the bridge.Type: GrantFiled: July 14, 2010Date of Patent: November 13, 2012Assignee: Damptech APSInventor: Imad H. Patent number: 6840016Abstract: The invention relates to the protection of structural systems such as apartment houses against dynamic loading caused by earthquakes, wind, traffic etc. When a frame structure is excited by a horizontal external force, the girders starts to displace horizontally. If such displacements are large or if they occur periodically they may have serious impact on the conditions of the structure and may cause severe damages or even result in a collapse. The present invention relates to a very simply designed and easily produced damper with two members being interconnected in a rotational joint. By means of the arrangement of the damper in the structural system, displacement occurring in the system is transferred to the members being forced to rotate in relation to each other. Frictional resistance between the two members is dampening the rotational movement and thus the displacement in the system.Type: GrantFiled: August 3, 2000Date of Patent: January 11, 2005Inventor: Imad H.
