  • Patent number: 4883490
Abstract: An acetabular cup of approximately hemispherical configuration adapted for implantation in the acetabulum and having an outer surface with a generally part-spherical contour and an inner concave bearing surface adapted to receive a femoral head. The outer surface has a plurality of grooves defining segments, and the grooves are adapted to receive, and interlock with, cement for affixing the acetabular cup within the acetabulum. At least one of the grooves has an undercut which defines an overhanging flange. Cement is received in such groove behind the flange to interlock with the flange and to resist loosening of the acetabular cup from the acetabulum. The acetabular cup has spacer lugs on the segments, and a radiopaque marker is embedded in one of the segments in a polar region of the acetabular cup.

  • Patent number: 4846841
Abstract: A femoral prosthesis affixable to a remnant of a natural femoral head and cooperable with an acetabular component comprising a femoral insert having a cavity for at least partially receiving the remnant and a femoral shell having a cavity for at least partially receiving the insert. The insert is affixable to the remnant without cement, and the shell is mounted on the insert by a taper lock. The outer surface of the shell has a part-spherical region for slidably cooperating with the acetabular component to accommodate articulating motion. Selection of an appropriate combination of the insert and the shell enables hemi-surface arthroplasty or total surface arthroplasty with a minimal number of prosthetic components. Replacement of the femoral shells enables a conversion to total surface arthroplasty.

  • Patent number: 4795469
Abstract: An acetabular cup comprising a shell having inner and outer ends, a cavity having an outer opening at the outer end, a surface defining an inner opening at the inner end and external screw threads for threading the shell into the acetabulum and an insert having an external polar cap and a concave bearing surface of generally part spherical configuration opening at a mouth. The insert is adapted to receive a femoral head and has an overhang to reduce the likelihood of dislocation. The insert is receivable in the shell with the polar cap being received in the inner opening of the shell. Interlocking teeth on the surface of the shell and on the polar cap of the insert hold the insert in any of a plurality of different angular positions relative to the shell so that the desired angular orientation of the overhang can be obtained.

  • Patent number: 4795471
Abstract: A hip-joint prosthesis which provides for universal motion about three transverse pivot axes comprising a femoral member adapted to be coupled to the femur and a cup assembly partially receiving the femoral member. The cup assembly is slidably received in the acetabulum. Motion about one of the pivot axes can occur in the prosthesis and motion about the other two pivot axes is forced to occur between the cup assembly and the acetabulum.

  • Patent number: 4623352
Abstract: A protrusio cup for implantation in the acetabulum, including an acetabular cup and a protrusio shell mounted on the acetabular cup by interlocking grooves and projections. The acetabular cup has a hemispherical bearing surface which terminates in a part-conical surface. The bearing surface and the part-conical surface are rotated through an angle to reduce the likelihood of dislocation and to increase the range of motion.

  • Patent number: 4475549
Abstract: An acetabular cup positioner for positioning an acetabular cup during hip surgery comprising a head having an axis which is receivable in the acetabular cup, a first arm coupled to the head and extending from the head at an acute angle, and a second arm coupled to the first arm at a location spaced from the head. The second arm extends generally parallel to the axis of the head, and the arms and the axis are in substantially the same plane. First and second handles are coupled to the first arm such that the anteversion angle can be established for the right and left hips by aligning the first and second handles, respectively, with the patient axis.

  • Patent number: 4473068
Abstract: An implant for use in retention of the greater trochanter comprising a circumferentially extending band and first and second bands extending between opposite regions of the circumferentially extending band. One or more prongs are coupled to the bands. The implant cooperates with a wire for tying the implant in position over the greater trochanter. The bands of the implant are deformable so that they can be conformed to approximate the contour of the greater trochanter. The prongs are adapted to penetrate the abductor muscle-tendon attached to the greater trochanter to help retain the greater trochanter in position.

  • Patent number: 4437193
Abstract: A protrusio cup comprising an acetabular cup and a protrusio shell mounted on the acetabular cup so that the protrusio cup can be implanted as a unit. The protrusio shell has three flanges for engaging the ilium, ischium and pubis, respectively. The acetabular cup has an extension in at least the superior-posterior region to reduce the likelihood of dislocation.
