  • Patent number: 6212882
Abstract: An assembly, a method and a motor vehicle for cleaning ambient air in the vicinity of an internal combustion engine (102) having combustion air inlet means (103) and energy emitting means (104)are disclosed. The assembly (101) further includes adsorbent means (105) for adsorbing at least one pollutant when in a first mode of operation and for desorbing the pollutant when in a second mode of operation. The adsorbent means have an inlet (106) for polluted ambient air (107, 107′) and an outlet (108) for cleaned ambient air (109, 109′). Furthermore, the assembly (101) includes a pollutant conduit (110) through which the desorbed pollutant is transferred from the adsorbent means (105) to the combustion air inlet means (103) when in the second mode of operation, and the adsorbent means (105) are arranged for being brought into the second mode of operation by means of energy supplied from the energy emitting means (104).

  • Patent number: 5996339
Abstract: Catalyzers for purification of exhaust gases are disclosed including a housing, an inlet for supplying the exhaust gases to the housing, a first catalyzer within the housing adjacent to the inlet and a second catalyzer within the housing downstream of the first catalyzer, the first catalyzer having a smaller cross-sectional area than the second catalyzer, and the inlet being angled with respect to the longitudinal axis of the first catalyzer.

  • Patent number: 5914090
Abstract: An apparatus is provided to achieve enhanced cleaning capacity for exhaust from a motor vehicle, especially during cold starting of the vehicle. The apparatus includes a first catalytic converter, and a hydrocarbon trap located downstream of the first catalytic converter. A second catalytic converter is then located downstream of the hydrocarbon trap. The distance between the first catalytic converter and the hydrocarbon trap is selected so that the period of time that elapses from the start of the engine until desorption occurs in the hydrocarbon trap is greater than or equal to the period of time that elapses from the start of the engine until the first catalytic converter lights up to its normal operating temperature. An electrically heated start converter located upstream of the second catalytic converter is activated when desorption occurs in the hydrocarbon trap.

  • Patent number: 5809773
Abstract: A method and a device are disclosed for catalyst emission control including an electrically heated startup catalyst which is positioned adjacent a main catalyst in the exhaust pipe associated with the engine. Also provided are a source of current, a switch, a control unit, a lambda sensor, and an electrically operated air pump including and air channel inserted between the lambda sensor and the startup catalyst. In connection with startup of the engine the startup catalyst and/or the air pump are activated by means of the control unit. The invention provides improved purification of the exhaust gases emitted by the engine.
