  • Patent number: 5598779
Abstract: A sheet-guiding apparatus for a turning device in a rotary printing machine guides a sheet being printed to prevent smearing. The turning device includes a turning drum and at least one sheet-guiding cylinder. The turning drum and the sheet-guiding cylinder define a sheet transfer region and a sheet transfer path. The sheet-guiding apparatus comprises an air blower means, at least one blower/suction device, and a lower sheet-guiding device. The air blower means, which is arranged upstream of the sheet transfer region, includes a first set of air outlet openings for directing compressed air toward the sheet-guiding cylinder and at least a second air outlet opening for directing compressed air into the transfer region. The blower/suction device, which is disposed within the sheet-bearing surface of the turning drum, communicates with a plurality of openings disposed in the sheet-bearing surface and is coupled to a pneumatic device.

  • Patent number: 5488903
Abstract: For the register of a sleeve-shaped offset priming form in which the beginning and end of the plate-shaped blank of the printing form are connected by a weld seam, a guide element in the form of a projection is provided for the sleeve at the inside of the sleeve. A form cylinder which can be used in combination with the sleeve has a groove extending along its entire width, which groove has a depth that is greater than the height of the projection. The projection can be inserted completely into the groove so that the sleeve can be secured on the form cylinder in the circumferential direction.

  • Patent number: 5417157
Abstract: A pair of web pulling cylinders, particularly for use in printing machines, wherein a single-layer or multiple-layer web is conveyed between the cylinders which are pressed together. The cylinders are driven and are in driven connection through drive elements mounted on cylinder journals. • Patent number: 5228670
Abstract: To receive, store and deliver printed products in minimum space, with a device which can, itself, be stored in minimum space when free of products, a steel tape or ribbon (1, 21) is formed with U-shaped cuts (7) to define, within the ribbon, tongues (5, 22). The tape or ribbon is guided in a curved path, typically about a guide roller (4, 23), which causes the tongues to flare out tangentially. When in flared or projecting position, products (8, 33) can be pushed in the space between the extended tongues and the remainder of the tape or ribbon material which, upon then being guided in an essentially linear path, will cause the tongues to close and grip the products, whereupon the tape or ribbon with the products, thereon can be rolled into a storage roll.

  • Patent number: 5189957
Abstract: A sheet-conveying drum for skew register correction in multicolor printing that does not affect the drive in sheet-fed rotary presses. The sheet-conveying drum comprises gripper bars and support or carrying webs that are disposed on a drum shaft. The web disposed nearest the drive input has on its flange an arcuate bearing surface around which the drum body can be skewed relatively to the drum shaft. The web disposed opposite the drive input is coupled to an adjusting eccentric bushing by way of a flange to cause the drum to skew. The movements of drum skewing do not adversely affect the drive and, therefore, the transmission ratios of the sheet-guiding cylinders relative to one another.

  • Patent number: 5184553
Abstract: A suction transfer actuation system for a transfer drum of a multi-color sheet-fed rotary printing press for turning successive sheets, by rear-edge turning, during the sheet transfer from one printing unit to another to facilitate printing on the back side of the sheets. A plurality of suction arms are rigidly connected to a hollow suction rocker shaft connected to actuating levers carrying guide rollers engaging curved guide cam surfaces on a guide bar mounted on the transfer drum. The suction actuation system is driven by way of a cam rigidly mounted on the press frame engaged by a cam follower roller to oscillate a drive lever coupled by a link to a drive arm on the rocker shaft to rock the suction arms toward and away from the one printing unit under the guiding influence of the guide cam and guide rollers.

  • Patent number: 5127322
Abstract: For automating the placement or removal of printing plates on plate cylinders (16, 17) of rotary printing machines, particularly web printing machines, an application head (11) is secured to a multiple linked roboter arm (2), slidable vertically along a guide post (1). The roboter arm can be pivoted about the axis of the guide post, moved vertically thereabout, and includes a plurality of joints (3, 4, 5, 6) which connect roboter arm link elements (7, 8, 9, 10). The positioning head (11) is located at the roboter arm element (10) most remote from the guide post. The guide post is positioned between the axes of rotation of printing cylinders of adjacent printing stations, axially removed from the path of the web between the printing stations, so that interference with the web is effectively avoided.

  • Patent number: 5125334
Abstract: In order to improve mechanical positive synchronization in a sheet-fed printing machine between gripper carriages guided in wave-like fashion through printing units on endless chains and the associated impression cylinder, the impression cylinders (1) have twice the diameter of the plate and blanket cylinders (2, 3). Sprocket wheels (34), also of twice the diameter of the blanket cylinders, are fixed on the ends of the double-size impression cylinders (1) and on them there are disposed two diametrically opposite gripper carriage locating and fixing devices (24-32) which are adjustable both radially and tangentially and which can also be used to bring the different printing plates into register with one another on the printed sheet (38).

  • Patent number: 5111747
Abstract: The chambered doctor blade unit has an anilox roller against which a doctor blade can be engaged. An ink trough, and an arrangement to transport ink from the ink trough to a chambered doctor blade unit or an ink application roller is provided, the chambered doctor blade unit or the ink application roller being, respectively, operatively coupled with the anilox roller. The ink supply trough, the ink application device, the doctor blade and the ink trough form a single structural unit which is located on a carrier structure on the printing machine, to be removable as a unit. A plurality of units are severably coupled to a common ink pump shaft on the printing machine.

  • Patent number: 5110116
Abstract: Folded products, supplied in dual-comb like interdigited form are transported by a transport chain system (75) carrying grippers (84, 85) in a vertical direction to form a vertical stack. Grippers engage alternate products about their fold line, and hold the interdigited intermediate sheets therebetween. The transport system and a carrier structure are placed in relative positions to permit the grippers of the transport system to pick up the products (1, 2) at the fold line and, after reorienting the products, to place them in a vertical stack on a support (96, 110), a cam track (88) opening the grippers on the transport system (75) as the grippers pass about a vertically movable deflection wheel (97) to release the products. The deflection wheel moves upwardly as the stack grows.

  • Patent number: 5101725
Abstract: A doctor blade holder has two holder parts (4, 5) to clamp a doctor blade (3) with a straight edge therebetween. The holder parts define opposed holder surfaces (6, 7), which, at least in part, form surfaces of an elliptical cylinder which has a cross-sectional form in the shape of an ellipse (Z) which has a longitudinal axis (B--B) which intersects the longitudinal axis (A--A) of the cylinder by an angle of inclination (.alpha.) which, customarily, is in the order of between 0.1.degree. to 1.degree., but may be substantially larger. The minor half-axis of the ellipse (Z) is equal to the radius (r) of the printing machine cylinder (1) and the major half-axis of the ellipse (Z) is longer than the length (1) of the printing machine cylinder against which the doctor blade edge is engaged.
