  • Patent number: 5939482
Abstract: The invention concerns a two-stage method for the preparation of aqueous, self-crosslinking copolymer dispersions made from acrylate copolymers having acetoacetyl and carboxylic groups. • Patent number: 5811484
Abstract: A process is disclosed for preparing water-dilutable, acrylate copolymer-based lacquer binders. A polycarboxylic component is reacted with an epoxide group-containing polyhydroxylic component, and the carboxylic groups are then at least partially neutralized. As epoxide group-containing monomers for the polyhydroxylic components, glycidyl(meth)acrylate and/or glycidylallylether are used in proportions from 0.1 to 3% by weight. Associated with cross-linking components and if required with other lacquer binders, these lacquer binders are suitable for producing water-dilutable baking enamels with a low auxiliary organic solvent content.

  • Patent number: 5272188
Abstract: Water-dilutable coating binder combinations which can be deposited cathodically, and based on epoxy resin-amine adducts, acrylate copolymers and crosslinking components are described. The binders are particularly suitable for formulation of water-dilutable primers and one-coat paints when deposited cathodically are described. In 3 to 30% by weight, based on the solids, of a basic epoxy resin-amine adduct (A) which is free from epoxide groups, 70 to 97% by weight of a monomer mixture (B), which consists of esters of (meth)acrylic acid which contain secondary or tertiary amino groups, of monoesters of (meth)acrylic acid with diols, of (meth)acrylic acid alkyl esters and if appropriate of aromatic vinyl monomers, is polymerized. Components (A) and (B) comprise at least 5% by weight, preferably 10 to 20% by weight, of identical aliphatic radicals having 7 to 18 carbon atoms. The baked films based on these products have a high degree of gloss and an excellent UV, washing agent, and corrosion resistance.

  • Patent number: 5037920
Abstract: Acrylate copolymers containing amino, hydroxyl and fluorine groups useful as additives for aqueous cationic coating systems for preventing surface flaws and for improving the adhesion of further coats, in particular of PVC-containing coating materials, are described. In addition to amino groups which can be neutralized with acids, the acrylate copolymers contain a selected quantity of hydroxyl groups originating from monoesters of (meth)acrylic acid with diols, and fluorine from esters of (meth)acrylic acid. The additives are added in a quantity from 0.5 to 5.0% by weight, calculated on solids and relative to the solids content of the binder in a coating system.

  • Patent number: 4992525
Abstract: Cationic resins based on epoxy resins which are modified through the introduction of phosphoric acid segments and the process of producing the resins are described. The reaction of the phosphoric acid is carried out in a multiple-step process whereby, in a first step, the diester is formed through reaction of ortho-phosphoric acid with 2 moles of a monoepoxy compound or through reaction of a polyphosphoric acid with n-1 moles of a monoalcohol and subsequent reaction with n+1 moles of a monoepoxy compound. The remaining acid group is reacted with a di- or polyepoxy resin. The products obtained can still contain unreacted epoxy groups. The protonable groups are introduced via the epoxy groups and/or via the hydroxy groups present or set free by opening of the oxirane ring. The binders can be combined with hardening components or may be formulated as self-crosslinking binders. The binders have excellent resistance to corrosion when stoved as electrodeposited coatings.
