Publication number: 20130123822Abstract: A surgical instrument with a stowing knife blade includes an elongated shaft, an end effector coupled to the shaft and including two opposed jaws, a housing included in one of the jaws, a first member mounted in the housing and movable distally, a knife pivotally coupled with the first member, and a second member. The knife is configured to cut when advanced distally. The first and second members are moved distally at the same rate during a cutting motion of the knife and the second member blocks a rotation of the knife relative to the first member during the cutting motion of the knife. After moving through the first distance, relative movement between the first and second members occurs so as to permit or induce the previously blocked rotation of the knife so that the knife can be stowed.Type: ApplicationFiled: October 26, 2012Publication date: May 16, 2013Applicant: Intuitive Surgical Operations, Inc.Inventor: Intuitive Surgical Operations, Inc.

Publication number: 20130116712Abstract: Apparatus and methods for endoscopic colectomy are described herein. A colectomy device having a first and a second tissue approximation device is mounted on a colonoscope separated from one another. During deployment of the colectomy device, a diseased portion of the colon is positioned inbetween the tissue approximation devices. The tissue approximation devices are radially expanded such that they contact and grasp the colon wall at two sites adjacent to the diseased portion of the colon. The diseased portion is separated from the omentum and is transected using a laparoscope or is drawn into the colonoscope for later removal. The tissue approximation devices are then urged towards one another over the colonoscope to approximate the two free edges of the colon into contact together where they are fastened to one another using the tissue approximation device as a surgical stapler to create an end-to-end anastomosis.Type: ApplicationFiled: December 28, 2012Publication date: May 9, 2013Applicant: Intuitive Surgical Operations, Inc.Inventor: Intuitive Surgical Operations, Inc.

Publication number: 20130105552Abstract: Surgical systems and related methods verify the presence of an unfired surgical cartridge mounted to a surgical instrument. The cartridge includes an input that is actuated in a firing direction to operate the cartridge. An actuation input that is limited to less than or equal to a predetermined magnitude is generated. The actuation input includes at least one of a torque or a force. The actuation input is transferred to an output of a surgical instrument to attempt to actuate the output opposite to the firing direction by a predetermined amount. The output is drivingly coupled with the cartridge input when the cartridge is mounted to the surgical instrument. The resulting actuation of the output is measured and compared with a threshold actuation amount. A determination is made that the cartridge is present and unfired when the resulting actuation of the output is less than the threshold actuation amount.Type: ApplicationFiled: October 26, 2012Publication date: May 2, 2013Applicant: Intuitive Surgical Operations, Inc.Inventor: Intuitive Surgical Operations, Inc.

Publication number: 20130110129Abstract: A latch mechanism selectively retains a first assembly to a second assembly. The first and second assemblies are configured for sliding engagement along an engagement axis. The latch mechanism includes a latch shaft mounted to the first assembly to rotate about a latch shaft axis, a torsion spring to bias the latch shaft relative to the first assembly, and a transverse latch member coupled with the second assembly. The latch mechanism is configured to automatically latch in response to the first assembly being pushed toward the second assembly. The transverse latch member interacts with the latch shaft to rotate the latch shaft in a first direction in response to movement of the first assembly toward the second assembly. Further motion of the first assembly toward the second assembly results in rotation of the latch shaft opposite to the first direction into a retention configuration that retains the transverse latch member.Type: ApplicationFiled: October 26, 2012Publication date: May 2, 2013Applicant: Intuitive Surgical Operations, Inc.Inventor: Intuitive Surgical Operations, Inc.

Publication number: 20130105545Abstract: A cartridge of a surgical instrument includes a housing, a lead screw mounted for rotation in the housing, a drive member operatively coupled with the lead screw, and a knife member. The knife member is driven distally by the drive member and is configured to cut when moved distally. During an initial distal movement of the drive member, the knife member is coupled with the housing to restrain the knife member from moving distally. Subsequent to the initial distal movement of the drive member, the drive member drives the knife member toward the distal end.Type: ApplicationFiled: October 26, 2012Publication date: May 2, 2013Applicant: Intuitive Surgical Operations, Inc.Inventor: Intuitive Surgical Operations, Inc.

Publication number: 20130110131Abstract: An articulated surgical instrument for enhancing the performance of minimally invasive surgical procedures. The instrument has a high degree of dexterity, low friction, low inertia and good force reflection. A unique cable and pulley drive system operates to reduce friction and enhance force reflection. A unique wrist mechanism operates to enhance surgical dexterity compared to standard laparoscopic instruments. The system is optimized to reduce the number of actuators required and thus produce a fully functional articulated surgical instrument of minimum size.Type: ApplicationFiled: December 20, 2012Publication date: May 2, 2013Applicant: Intuitive Surgical Operations, Inc.Inventor: Intuitive Surgical Operations, Inc.

Publication number: 20130103051Abstract: A method of transmitting controller motion from a robotic manipulator to a surgical instrument includes rotating a plate included in the robotic manipulator. The plate has a driving surface that bears against an inner gimbal of a gimbal assembly included in the surgical instrument. The plate is rotated about a center of motion that coincides with an intersection of two rotational axes of the gimbal assembly.Type: ApplicationFiled: December 10, 2012Publication date: April 25, 2013Applicant: INTUITIVE SURGICAL OPERATIONS, INC.Inventor: Intuitive Surgical Operations, Inc.
