Patent number: 9903036Abstract: A method for manufacturing rotogravure cylinders with a cylinder base made of aluminum. The method involves the coating of the cylinder surface with high velocity spraying, the copper plating in an appropriate solution, the engraving of the cylinder, and the hardening of the cylinder by chromium plating. The spraying process is accomplished by High-Velocity Air-Fuel or High-Velocity Oxygen-Fuel thermal spraying which leads to less surface porosity, better adhesion of the copper substrate and better dimensional accuracy.Type: GrantFiled: October 10, 2013Date of Patent: February 27, 2018Assignee: Paramount International ServicesInventor: Ioannis Ioannou

Patent number: 9731496Abstract: The present invention describes a method for manufacturing rotogravure cylinders with a cylinder base made of aluminum and a single metallic layer on the cylinder surface. The method comprises the construction of the cylinder base, the deposition of the metallic layer on the cylinder surface, the thinning of the cylinder to achieve the required dimensions, the polishing of the cylinder surface and finally the etching of the cylinder with the desired printing pattern. The metallic layer can be any copper alloy that will produce a surface with a Vickers hardness of about 400 HV. The metallic layer is deposited onto the cylinder base using any thermal spraying method. The cylinder surface is then thinned and polished by using any conventional method. Finally, the cylinder is etched to provide a superb cylinder for the printing industry.Type: GrantFiled: August 29, 2013Date of Patent: August 15, 2017Assignee: Paramount International Services Ltd.Inventor: Ioannis Ioannou

Publication number: 20150259817Abstract: The present invention describes a method for manufacturing rotogravure cylinders with a cylinder base made of aluminum. The method involves the coating of the cylinder surface with high velocity spraying, the copper plating in an appropriate solution, the engraving of the cylinder, and the hardening of the cylinder by chromium plating. The spraying process is accomplished by High-Velocity Air-Fuel or High-Velocity Oxygen-Fuel thermal spraying which leads to less surface porosity, better adhesion of the copper substrate and better dimensional accuracy. The advantage of this method is the elimination of the surface roughening process and the elimination of the preplating process. In addition, the end plates are manufactured partly from aluminum and partly from steel which further reduces the total weight of the cylinder. The elimination of these processes reduces the weight of the cylinder and the overall manufacturing time considerably.Type: ApplicationFiled: October 10, 2013Publication date: September 17, 2015Inventor: Ioannis Ioannou

Publication number: 20150197080Abstract: The present invention describes a method for manufacturing rotogravure cylinders with a cylinder base made of a light weight material like aluminum. The method involves the surface treatment of the cylinder with mechanical means, the copper plating in an appropriate solution, the engraving of the cylinder, and the hardening of the cylinder by chromium plating. The advantage of this method is that the chemical treatment for the preparation of the cylinder surface which generates hazardous waste is replaced by a mechanical process. In addition, the reduction of the cylinder weight considerably (e.g. for aluminum base cylinder the weight reduction is two thirds of the weight of a steel base cylinder) reduces significantly the transportation costs. Moreover, the adhesion of the copper layer to be engraved is improved and the cost and time of manufacturing reduced.Type: ApplicationFiled: March 27, 2015Publication date: July 16, 2015Inventor: Ioannis Ioannou
