  • Patent number: 6489386
Abstract: A polymer composition and method for reducing the permeability of gases through molded polymeric containers and films by incorporating into the polymer from which the container or film is formed an effective amount of a barrier-enhancing additive, such as monoesters of hydroxybenzoic acid and hydroxynaphthoic acid.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: August 9, 2000
Date of Patent: December 3, 2002
Assignee: E. I. du Pont de Nemours and Company
Inventors: Irene Greenwald Plotzker, Thomas Michael Ford, Kenneth George Sharp, Samuel Tacitus D'Arcangelis
  • Patent number: 6126856
Abstract: When small amounts of zeolite or titanosilicates are added to thermotropic liquid crystalline aromatic polyester, poly(ester-amide) or poly(ester-imide) compositions, the compositions become less flammable. In many cases addition of the zeolite or titanosilicates does not significantly affect other properties of the composition, which may be used as molding resins, for instance to make parts useful in the electrical, electronic or automotive industry.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: June 16, 1999
Date of Patent: October 3, 2000
Assignee: E.I. DuPont de Nemours and Company
Inventors: David Richard Corbin, Steven Gust Cottis, Irene Greenwald Plotzker
  • Patent number: 5939158
Abstract: A laminar shaped article which exhibits substantial improvement in the fluid barrier properties over the laminate of the prior art. The article comprises a heterogeneous blend of: (a) polyolefin with (b) a melt blend of a nylon and a polyvinyl alcohol component, and a compatibilizer(c), which is either: i) a mixture of two different alkylcarboxyl-substituted polyolefins which serves as a compatibilizer; or ii) a small amount of alkylcarboxyl-substituted polyolefin with a small amount of grafted maleic anhydride moieties; or iii) a high weight percent of alkylcarboxyl-substituted polyolefin with a high graft level of grafted maleic anhydride moieties.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: March 24, 1998
Date of Patent: August 17, 1999
Assignee: E.I. du Pont de Nemours and Company
    Inventor: Irene Greenwald Plotzker
  • Patent number: 5688895
Abstract: Disclosed herein are thermotropic liquid crystalline poly(ester-amides) containing repeat units derived from alipatic diamines and other monomers, such as aromatic diols, aromatic dicarboxylic acids, aromatic hydroxycarboxylic acids, and optionally aliphatic diols. The polymers are particularly useful as films and in multilayer structures as barrier layers because of their relatively low permeability to various compounds.
