  • Patent number: 4771760
Abstract: Method and apparatus for burning stacked newspapers in a fireplace includes a grate having a sloping support for supporting a stack of newspapers at an angle inclined to the horizontal with free edges of the newspapers at the front and air supply directing a flow of air in a substantially horizontal direction at a position above the free edges of the newspapers to supply oxygen to enhance burning and to continuously turn the uppermost pages of the stack of newspapers upward to burn the newspapers page-by-page.

  • Patent number: 4362090
Abstract: An air circulating device and method includes a base positioned on the floor of a room with a pair of ducts extending therefrom and terminating adjacent the ceiling and fans disposed within the base to draw hot air from the ceiling via one of the ducts and force cold air toward the ceiling via the other duct such that hot air drawn from the ceiling is replaced with cold air drawn from the floor is replaced by hot air drawn from the ceiling. The cold air drawn from the floor is discharged at the ceiling at a rate greater than the rate at which hot air from the ceiling is discharged at the floor, preferably three times as great, to eliminate floor drafts and obtain a proper mixture of cold and hot air.

  • Patent number: 4286975
Abstract: A heat exchanger for installation on the top of a chimney of a building includes a housing having a lower end receiving the top of the chimney and an upper end with openings permitting the escape of effluent from the chimney and a heat exchanger assembly disposed in the housing including a central chamber and a spirally arranged duct network defining an effluent spiral path between the top of the chimney and the central chamber and a fresh air spiral path between an inlet disposed at the lower end of the housing and the central chamber, the effluent and fresh air spiral paths being in heat exchange relationship such that air passing through the fresh air spiral path is heated by hot effluent gases passing upward through the chimney and the effluent spiral path for use in heating the building.

  • Patent number: 4197613
Abstract: A meat tenderizing device includes sharp tipped blades mounted in a support body and a spreader assembly for spreading the blades apart such that the device can be utilized to tenderize meat by forcing the sharp tipped blades into the meat to cut connective tissue of the meat during insertion and spreading the blades apart while the blades remain in the meat to tear the connective tissue of the meat.

  • Patent number: 4077388
Abstract: A forced air circulation heating unit is formed of a U-shaped conduit for placement on the floor of a fireplace and a blower unit including a fan mounted in an insulating housing for forcing air through the conduit to be heated in the fireplace and discharged into a room. The housing has an interior lining of heat and sound insulating material such that the blower unit can be positioned within the fireplace while protecting the fan from heat and reducing noise from the fan. Jets are provided on the conduit to direct streams of air along legs of the conduit toward a base or heating chamber joining the legs in order to force air toward the center of the base and underneath fuel resting on the floor of the fireplace thereby reducing carbon monoxide, facilitating the starting of fires and reducing smoking.

  • Patent number: 4074681
Abstract: A forced air circulation heating unit is formed of a U-shaped conduit placed on the floor of the fireplace and a fan forcing air through the conduit to be heated in the fireplace and projected into the room. Jets are provided on the conduit to direct streams of air from legs of the conduit toward a base joining the legs in order to completely burn fuel thereby reducing carbon monoxide, to facilitate starting of a fire and to reduce smoking. The base of the conduit has an increased cross-sectional flow of air and the jet streams cooperate with the base to assure that the hottest part of the fire is produced by coals on and adjacent the base thereby increasing heat obtained from the unit and saving fuel.

  • Patent number: 4062345
Abstract: Air heating and circulating apparatus adapted to be positioned on the floor of a fireplace to produce heat pumping action without requiring a blower includes a base pipe defining a primary heating chamber and an inlet leg for supplying air thereto, a hot air discharge pipe defining a secondary heating chamber disposed above the primary heating chamber and an outlet leg for discharging heated air into a room, and a plurality of support pipes mounting the hot air discharge pipe above the base pipe and establishing communication between the primary and secondary heating chambers. The hot air discharge pipe is upwardly inclined from the secondary heating chamber to the outlet leg and the support pipes are arranged at an angle to the vertical such that air heated in the primary heating chamber rises in the apparatus to be provided with a horizontal velocity component for discharge through the outlet leg.

  • Patent number: 3973479
Abstract: A floor-ceiling air circulating device includes a base adapted to be supported on the floor of a room, a duct assembly extending vertically from the base and defining a flow path between an upper outlet adjacent the ceiling of the room and a lower inlet adjacent the floor of the room and a flow path between an upper inlet near the ceiling and a lower outlet near the floor, and a fan associated with each flow path and housed in the base to stabilize the device. One of the fans draws air from the floor and discharges the air at the ceiling via one flow path and the other fan draws air from the ceiling via the other flow path and discharges the air at the floor such that the air drawn from the floor is replaced with air drawn from the ceiling and vice versa to thereby circulate the air at the floor and at the ceiling and reduce temperature stratification in the room.
