Patent number: 11154802Abstract: Systems and methods are disclosed for an expanded metal filter for use with an automotive safety device, such an inflatable airbag system. The expanded metal filter is composed of a plurality of expanded metal layers, wherein when a first expanded metal layer is turned over or inverted the peaks of the first expanded metal layer conform to valleys of a second expanded metal layer, and valleys of the first expanded metal layer conform to peaks of the first expanded layer whereby the first and second expanded layers nest together.Type: GrantFiled: July 26, 2019Date of Patent: October 26, 2021Assignee: Autoliv ASP, Inc.Inventor: Isaac Hoffman

Patent number: 9669799Abstract: A seatbelt pretensioner is provided including an inner tube with a gas generator housed therein, an intermediate sleeve extending over the inner tube, and a spool portion housing the sleeve and the tube. The spool portion includes spiraling flutes thereon that correspond to a protruding member in the form of flutes or pegs extending from the intermediate sleeve. In response to the gas generator firing, the sleeve will be driven longitudinally, causing the protruding member to act on the spiraling flutes of the spool, thereby causing the spool to rotate. The intermediate sleeve can include a spiraling slot that receives a peg from the inner tube, so that the intermediate sleeve will rotate to compound the spool rotation.Type: GrantFiled: March 15, 2013Date of Patent: June 6, 2017Assignee: AUTOLIV ASP, INC.Inventors: Earl Henry Nelson, Hans-Otto Kock, Isaac Hoffman

Publication number: 20130019587Abstract: Thruster devices for use with a lateral thrust module and/or a flight body are adapted to achieve short action times with relatively slow burning propellant materials. Such thruster devices include a combustion chamber with a plurality of propellant grains disposed therein. At least some of the plurality of propellant grains are formed into a selected shape. Methods of making thruster devices include forming a housing comprising a first longitudinal end and an opposing second longitudinal end. The housing is formed to define a combustion chamber. A plurality of propellant grains are disposed in the combustion chamber of the housing, where each propellant grain comprises a selected shape. An igniter is coupled to the housing, which igniter is adapted to initiate a combustion of the plurality of propellant grains during deployment of the thruster device.Type: ApplicationFiled: July 21, 2011Publication date: January 24, 2013Inventors: Isaac Hoffman, Brett Hussey, Randy Clark, Kenneth J. Clark

Publication number: 20120326423Abstract: A filter element made up of a plurality of substantially spaced-apart barriers that afford fluid communication between a source of pressurized airbag inflation gas containing entrained particulates and an airbag inflation gas entry port. The inflation gas and entrained debris pass along a tortuous path of back-and-forth oppositely-directed gas flow pathways between successive pairs of adjacent of the barriers. An aperture is formed through each of the barriers, and the barriers are so arranged that the aperture in a selected barrier is remote from the aperture in any barrier adjacent thereto. A debris pocket at an end of one of the gas flow pathways is so configured that particulates entrained in inflation gas collect in the debris pocket sheltered from sustained entrainment in the outflow of inflation gas.Type: ApplicationFiled: June 23, 2011Publication date: December 27, 2012Inventor: Isaac Hoffman

Publication number: 20080211215Abstract: A new type of airbag inflator that may be used in an airbag system is disclosed. The inflator will generally include a housing and two initiators. Accordingly, the inflator is a “dual-stage” inflator. The two stages are disposed within the housing. The second initiator is disposed within a second stage generant cup. A cap is also used to engage the second stage cup. The cap maintains seated engagement with the second stage cup, even during deployment of the second stage. The second stage will also include one or more perforations, which constitute openings through which gas may flow. When the second initiator is in the unactuated state, these perforations will be isolated from the generant by the cap. Actuation of the second initiator unseals the one or more perforations but does not unseat the cap from the cup, due to constraints put in place to prevent such unseating.Type: ApplicationFiled: May 13, 2008Publication date: September 4, 2008Applicant: Autoliv ASP, Inc.Inventors: Isaac Hoffman, Kirk Rasmussen, Bradley W. Smith
